"Of all my inventions," Thomas A. Edison reminisced, some years before his death on October 18, 1931, "the incandescent light was the most difficult." One October evening, the 32-year-old inventor sat in his laboratory, weary from 13 months of repeated failure to find a filament that would stand the stress of electric current. The scientific press, at first politely skeptical, were now openly derisive. Discouraged backers were refusing to put up further funds. Idly Edison picked up a bit of lampblack mixed with tar, rolled it into a thread - "Thread," he mused, "...thread...thread...carbonized cotton thread." He had tried every known metal. Now he'd turn to the vegetable kingdom. It required five hours to carbonize a length of thread in a muffle furnace. The first one broke before it could be removed from the mold; likewise a second and a third. An entire spool of thread was consumed; then a second spool. Finally, a perfect filament emerged, only to be broken in an effort to insert it into the vacuum tube. Another was destroyed when a jeweler's screw driver fell against it. After two days and two nights the filament was successfully inserted. The bulb was exhausted of air and sealed, the current turned on. "The sight we had so long desired to see met our eyes." And then Edison, after working continuously for 48 hours, sat for another 48 hours - until the light blinked out - gazing intently at the world's first incandescent electric lamp." ("Gospel Banner"). It's been said - the difference between success and failure is not intelligence or talent or passion - but persistence. Winners...just...don't...give...up! As grateful as I am that Edison didn't give up, I am more thankful that Jesus Christ went the distance and willingly "laid down His life" so that we could know the Father and enjoy Him forever! "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart" (Gal. 6:9). Today, let's cling to the promise that God's "grace is sufficient for thee," when we need to go one more mile, tackle one more obstacle, lift one more load, and wait one more day. For, in the final analysis, the worst thing we can lose...is heart. |

If Edison had been more educated and had been more of a metallurgist, we never may have seen the light. Cotton carbon? No way...won't even try it. When I think about Edison and realize that his success came in part by not knowing all things and giving the next thing offered a chance... I am reminded of seeking recovery. What I have tried wasn't working... maybe I will listen and try what is next offered. Sure am grateful that someone shared from what they knew about AA back then. Just as Edison in his ignorance found success, God doesn't let us know all things but we always find the answers when we follow His plan and will for our lives. My struggle of today may be the Lord teaching me so I will have my solutions for tomorrow.
