Marry & Bury Salvation Kurts Daily Muse 6-1-07 Dr. J. Vernon McGee used to tell the story of the lady in the deep South who fell in love with her childhood sweetheart. They eventually married and set up a little house. But years later, the husband died of a heart attack. The lady just couldn't live without him, so she had him embalmed, sealed in a giant plastic case, and mounted just inside her front door. Whenever she would come home from work, she'd ask, "Hi, John. How are you?" And felt quite content to carry on with life. One day, the lady took a European vacation, and met and fell in love with a man. They married and honeymooned in Europe. Finally, they made their way back to her home. As the new husband was opening the front door and about to carry his bride over the threshold, he nearly dropped her when he shouted, "Who's that!?" The lady said, "Oh, that's John." The new husband immediately dug a hole way out back, put John in it, and covered it over, with no gravestone or marker. He was gone. He had buried the old man. "Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life...knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin" (Rom. 6:4,6). Friend, many of us still have some "burying" to do. We are "new creatures" in Christ, but we continue to carry around old habits, sins, addictions, and hatred. The Lord doesn't want to patch up our old man, he wants him buried, once and for all. This weekend, get out the "shovel" of commitment, dig the hole of obedience, and bury the old you. Only then, can you experience complete freedom, and the love, joy and peace of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. For this is the day of salvation, where you will "marry the Bridegroom" and "bury the old man." |

Jesus already has the hole dug up. All I need do is let go of the things I hold onto and He will place them as far as the east is from the west and as deep as the deepest sea.
