I'm sorry to intrude, but, I have a question for a friend. Although I was raised Catholic, and studied it for years, I don't know the answer and hope someone here does. This is for Roman Catholics only, ok? Can one receive first holy communion if one has not been baptised first? I know the Catholics expect one to receive 6 of the 7 sacraments, (one being the holy orders or matromony), I do not know if the sacrements must be received in order. My friend wants to send her child to catholic school. But, he's not been baptised. That's the crux of the problem. So, does the order of the sacraments matter in this case? Can he receive Communion without Baptism first? Thanks for any help you might be able to give. ![]() Shalom!

Hi Teach, I'm not a Catholic but there is a good resource for you to try, called the American Catholic Organization, that can give you the information you need. I am certain that there can be no holy communion ministered without baptism and the order of the other sacaraments I think must be followed as well. I took a quick look at the sight myself and read part of an article on confirmation. Maybe someone will come along with some more information for your friend. Oh, btw Teach, you could never be an intrusion here-only a welcome guest! ![]() shalom! cmc

Short answer... Step one, two, three, four... Long answer... the dogma and theology of the RCC says that no communion with sin in your heart (all Christian beliefs say this as well) The RCC holds baptism of infants (or anyone) as a removal of the sins of Adam. Without said sin removed, your heart is not free of sin...thus no communion should be allowed. All the sacraments may be given in one day to a new believer but they must be given in order. Baptism is first...always. We can get into semantics and a year long study on the order of things by all Christian belief systems but for the most part, baptism first (always) is held by the RCC more so then any other Christian religion.

Hi there historyteach. I just wanted to add that I grew up going to Catholic schools. There were alot of kids that weren't Catholic in my classes. Although they could not receive communion, they participated in all other areas.

Call your church or a church and ask..you have to be baptised first to receive communion....but I was not baptised catholic they only recongize one Baptism so that is all I did....then took a bunch of classes through RCIA and then received communion (also confirmation on the same night as communion I believe)

It depends. The RCC accepts baptisms from many other Christian religions. One must have an accepted baptism to receive communion however.
