Catholicism, Alcoholism, and Me

Hi gang,
I'm new, but post mostly in the Alcoholic section.

Are there any Catholics/Christians that use wine at mass? If so how do you get around that without giving up taking the blood of Christ?

Thanks,
PR

Hi, I'm glad you are wanting to partake of the Lord's supper. Our local Catholic church offers grape juice as an alternative as does my own protestant denomination.
Welcome to our forum and I hope you will make yourself at home here!

The consecrated bread is the body and blood of our lord, Jesus Christ. So is the consecrated wine. Therefor, one not need drink the wine to receive the full sacrament. I hope that answers your question

Cool, all those years of Catholic school wasted on my youth!

Thanks Alera.

I was planning at one point to go into Canon Law for a living. Seriously LOL.

Here is one notation from Canon Law
Quote:
Can. 925 Holy communion is to be given under the species of bread alone or, in accordance with the liturgical laws, under both species or, in case of necessity, even under the species of wine alone.
From the General Instruction of the Roman Missal

Quote:
282. Sacred pastors should take care to ensure that the faithful who participate in the rite or
are present at it are as fully aware as possible of the Catholic teaching on the form of Holy
Communion as set forth by the Ecumenical Council of Trent. Above all, they should instruct the
Christian faithful that the Catholic faith teaches that Christ, whole and entire, and the true
Sacrament, is received even under only one species
, and consequently that as far as the effects are
concerned, those who receive under only one species are not deprived of any of the grace that is
necessary for salvation.

I guess it's different for everyone, but for me, it wasn't an issue. The knowledge that it's not merely a sip of wine overwhelmed any anxiety about it.

Wine and me would not go well together. Just a sip is something that hits hard for me. If it was beer or even hard stuff, just a sip wouldn't have the same impact as wine does. I happen to be one of those that it would be different for.
Grape juice and bread still carries the same meaning for me as a sip of wine.

I hear you, best. I did try to note that my experience is not universal. Plus, as has been noted above, Catholicism believes that you get the whole thing, so to speak, even if you just receive the bread, so an alcoholic Catholic is covered either way and probably shouldn't worry about it too much.
