What do you get paid for?

When I was a young buck to about earliy 30s, I use to say I get paid for what I do. From mid 30s to early 40s I said I get paid for what I know. Now I feel like I get paid for what I tolerate.

What to do you get paid for?
And for anyone ahead of me... what's next?

Nice thinking, Jazz.

I used to get paid for who I knew. I now get paid for what I do. As I get to know my job better, I have had payrises based on what I know. I shall be leaving when I get to the "tolerate" stage, if not before.

What's next? Perhaps passing on what I have learnt? So another what I know, I guess. Or, what I have experienced anyway.

Interesting discussion!

I get paid to think. How cool is that?!?

I used to get paid for what I could do. Then, after a M.S. degree that taught me how to think rather than just giving me *knowledge* and a number of years gaining the necessary experience, I became more valuable for the way I think - strategy, managing large-scale, complex projects and such.

My dream job? I want to work for a think tank. I want to spend my days brainstorming and researching new business ideas and making them happen.

It doesn't get much cooler than that, IMO.

It seems that lately that I get paid to exist. Work's a little slow right now, but I'm not complaining.

Jazz, I love your original post!

I have to think about how to answer for myself....

I get paid for what I do, but I couldn't do what I do if I didn't know what I know, so I also get paid for what I know, but if I don't do, then my know can take my briefcase packing.

I use to get paid for what I could get others to do. (Project Management)
Then I got paid for what I could do for others (Consulting)
Now I get paid for helping others. (Therapist)

I'd like to do a version of this. Eventually I want to get back into consulting, but in more of an Industrial / Organizational role. A best of both worlds....at least until I am comfortable again, then I'll go back to what I could do for others.

As a photographer I get paid to make other people look good.

When I worked for the city I got paid so my supervisors would look like they had something to do (supervise me). So I guess I was still making others look good. I don't think that was progress.

When I worked for the state I got paid to wait for my supervisors to find something for me to do, and I kept really busy so I looked like I didn't need anything to do, so I guess I got paid to make me look good. I think this is progress.

I think I want to work for the feds and be a politician, that way I can just sit back and get paid to let others make me look good. That would definetly be progress.

Mike

I get paid (not nearly enough mind you) for what I do. I think for others who really didn't think at all. For if they had, they would not be where they are now. If that were the case, I would be without a job. However, although crime does not pay, it pays me and there will always be those who do not think.

In other words:

I work in the College Educational department in a Maximum security prison. I am the registrar and do the class scheduling for those earning their GED or taking a Vocational class.

I am still kind of laughing (sorry Jazz) about the tolerate thing.
I don't "tolerate" well.
You want to explain?

I get paid to play and entertain mine and 3 other kids all day....to run the house and make sure all is well within the family.... I am a stay at home mom but also babysit part time....I used to get paid to dispense prescriptions and also feed my addiction , but had to let go of that career so i could live to see my kids grow up.
I love being home with them but will be glad (kinda) when they get back in school. I say that now but will be crying when they aren't here....silly woman I am

I've been in telecom for 16 years, computer jock prior 3 years, electronics tech prior 3 years, student prior 2 years,(learning to be an Elec. tech). Day time meat cutter and night time musician prior 4 years,(the other guys in the band were always trying to talk me into getting another job that wasn't so dangerous for my fingers )

So for years I use to get paid for what I did, (except when I was a musician, no money there hence the day job LOL!!). During my telecom years I progressed into management, changed companies twice and some positions here and there and got paid for what I knew, (how to build and operate big a$$ networks). Same thing basically that I do now but since 2004 I'm back w/ the same mega company I happily escaped from back in 1998. Now I'm surrounded by idiots, (again) and a mega company bureaucracy that I have to tolerate.

Ever read Dilbert? That's my life. I use to read Dilbert and laugh, then I would read Dilbert and think... hey wait a minute! This is my life? Why am I laughing? LOL!!!

I was just curious what other folks got paid for, that's all.

By the time I do get paid, I can't even remember what it's for. Sometimes I think it's for being the last one standing. I love what I do - I must because I do plenty of it without ever seeing a dime.

I remember those days of tolerating and I pray I won't have to go back.

I get paid to depress some, make some happy and to help others start getting paid..........hmmmm....

In Other Words:

I am a paralegal who works for two attorneys, one of whom specializes in estate planning, probate work (depress people), business law and incorporations (helping others get paid by starting new businesses) and real estate (making people happy, they always are when they just purchased a new home)

I get paid for making people like me.

I'm a professional schmoozer, in addition to a waitress. The professional schmoozer part plays into my long-term career goals, which will remain a mystery as I'm an extremely paranoid person.

Hey, it's kept me out of trouble so far.

Well.....

My interview panel was a group of kids - they wanted to pay me to listen and act, they paid me for tenacity and heart.

HOWEVER it isn't them that pick up the bill! Those who PAY me I believe wanted to pay me to look like we listened and there has been some dispute ever since!

My post has been in continuous review hotly for the last 8 months and quietly for the last 4 years. My (very slim) hope is that they will pay me to help THEM listen and understand why that matters.

All in all I'd just like to be of some help.
