I guess I split my time between the "what I know" and "what I do" camps... I get paid for providing solutions. I'm a software engineer (at the senior/lead level). A lot of it involves thinking -- the more outside the box it is the more innovative the solution. Creativity counts for a lot if you can pull it off successfully. The art of what I do is really a mindset -- a way of thinking and approaching a problem or need (analysis and design). The science of what I do is mainly technique and experience (coding, delivery, deployment). The rest of it is people interaction, (which might put me partly into the "what I tolerate" camp). I think the next step is getting paid for what you don't do -- you know, like not going postal on people. -smiles-

I get paid to get people to do work that they don't necessary want to do for a group of people who don't understand the scope of their work. I also get paid to communicate what my bosses want to my staff and also to communicate to my bosses what they don't like and then I have create solutions for both. I also get paid for people not to like the decisions I make. So basically I'm a manager in health care. Good times (I'm being sarcastic). |

I get paid for listening to moans, working out what really is the problem, fixing it and then optomistically trying to ingrain this new solution in the moaners. Instructions with pictures and big arrows are pretty successful. Academics, huh? Jane
