SMILING EACH DAY By Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski An itinerant magid (preacher) came into a village and requested permission to speak. He also asked that the rabbi accord him the honor of attending his sermon. The well-meaning fellow carried on with a lengthy discourse which, for all its emotional energy, was unfortunately, totally devoid of substance. When he finally finished, he eagerly approached the rabbi for his opinion of the talk. "I must tell you, you have done me a great favor,'' the rabbi began, choosing his words for maximum effect, "because you have answered a perplexing question for me. "In Ecclesiastes, King Solomon states that there are different times for everything: 'A time to cry and a time to laugh ... a time to construct and a time to dismantle,' etc. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). "For each pair of extremes,'' he went on, "there is also a point of neutrality, i.e., a time neither to laugh nor to cry, neither to construct nor to demolish. The exception is, `there is a time to speak and a time to remain silent.' Where is the place in between? One is either talking or holding his voice. Correct?'' The magid affirmed that this was indeed a difficult verse, and couldn't wait to hear how the rabbi had resolved the problem. "I was bothered by this question for years,'' the rabbi swooped down upon his unsuspecting prey, "but your sermon just provided the solution. You spoke for two whole hours, but said absolutely nothing at all!'' Shalom!
