Question Skunk Smell - Anyone?

Does anyone know of anything besides Tomata juice to get rid of Skunk smell from a pet?

My dog just walked in and I just walked him out. But I cant leave him out there all night long. I found some interesting things online but I thought maybe someone else might know of something they have actually tried before?

Anyone, anyone, Bueller anyone

Grasias

Yup, my Toby got skunked a couple of times, I just hope you have the ingredients...by the way, tomato juice isn't very good for the animal, LOL

The best is a product called "Skunk Be Gone" and most pet shops carry it (gee, guess it's too late for you, LOL) but get some for next time. It's a spray on and towel off thing, works on our clothes too, and it takes the smell right out.

Next best is what my vet (well, Toby's vet) recommended...baking soda, dish soap and peroxide...mix a small bottle of peroxide with about 3 tables spoons of dish soap and a quarter cup of baking soda...and shampoo on animal.

I really feel for you, there is nothing worse than skunk!!! Good luck.

No Hugs...you stink

Depending on how badly he got skunked, he may continue to smell for a while if it got in his ears or if he swallowed any of it. The first time Toby got skunked, he almost died and the vet had to give him a shot of antihistamine. He said that the cat must have had his nose up the skunk's a$$ and he had never seen such a bad skunking. That onelasted about 2 months, and I had to leave tons of water around for him to drink. He was foaming at the mouth, his eyes were swollen shut, and he could hardly breathe.

The last time he just got grazed and it wasn't so bad. A bath in Skunk Be Gone did the trick. I'd suggest keeping some on hand, if it happens again you'll be glad you have it.

Let me know how this turns out. It's good to know that I'm not alone

Hugs
Ann

Talking

Well after careful review of the information on the Skunk spray and how bad he has it. I decided to just febreze the hell out of him. So far so good. He is a walking air freshener now, I am impressed! - I should do the other one now, just so he doesnt feel left out.

Thanks a bunch!

I will get that next time I am at the vet though, skunk be gone!

GB - My cats have never been skunked, but I have gallons of Febreze around (many cats + many years = very smelly furniture). I have often wondered if it would work on a skunking. We live on the edge of a 5000 acre wilderness area, and skunks and other smelly wildlife abound. Just planning ahead ...

24 hour later and the febreeze worked!

Whew, thank goodness. I set up spot lights on in front of my yard today and I got me .22 rifle by the door. I have always wanted a Skunk hat, like Boone or Crocket I forget which.

LMAO!!!

PETCO!!!

We have a Border Collie who is most welcome everywhere... fairly small place here (for now, but expanding at the rate of a nuclear weapon) We were all planned to take her to the Oxford Suites to visit MIL and HER Sister and damned if Shelby didn't roll in a rotten egg that morning and this dog is clean as a whistle normally... shares my pillow. I dropped her butt off and called it good. She was shining and beautiful when she came out of there. This is a "not MY job" sort of thing.

Do not use Fabreeze on pets! It is not meant for animals and can be harmful.

Just looking out for the little guys.

Tomato juice doesn't work.

I drank a whole quart and I could still smell the skunk spraying.
Jack Daniel's wasn't any better... it just put me on the floor, closer to the smell *LOL*

ROFLMAO!!!!

Thats good!

Fabreeze used as a topical I dont see how it can hurt them. He just had a on his head mostly. I was going to wash him with the peroxide/soap/soda wash today but he really doesnt need it. I might spray him again to keep the house fresh. god knows he goes everywhere!

No fabreeze cocktails for Bali!

Febreze Fabric Refresher® is safe to use around pets, and is even formulated to treat fabrics prone to pet odors, such as carpets, dog beds, sofas, and car upholstery.

Try these other Febreze® products to reduce pet odors on fabrics:

Febreze Antimicrobial is perfect for pet owners. It eliminates 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria on fabrics.

Febreze Allergen Reducer can also benefit pet owners. It reduces up to 75% of allergens from cats, dogs, and dust mites that can become airborne from fabrics.

With regular use of Febreze Fabric Refresher, pet owners can be confident about their homes smelling fresh and clean.

Pet Safety
Febreze answers a common concern of pet owners:

What Testing Has Been Done on Febreze?
We thoroughly evaluated the product and the individual ingredients with independent veterinarians and other scientists to ensure the human, pet, and environmental safety of Febreze. Specifically on ingredients in Febreze, scientists, doctors, safety experts, and veterinarians reviewed numerous scientific studies, and they all came to the same conclusion: Febreze is safe when used as directed.
I still wouldn't spray this product on my pets. They lick themselves and... who knows. I, personally, wouldn't risk it.

Does that mean I should stop putting end dust on the dog and cat, as they chase each other around the room?

Mythbusters says:

"2 cups of peroxide, two tablespoons of dishsoap and 1/4 cup of baking soda.... rub pooch down with that.... rinse it all.. then wash him with dog shampoo to make sure all the mix gets off him and he doesn't smell at all... yay!!"

Tomato juice doesn't work at all...
