Okay - who knows about Hondas?

I have a 90 Honda Accord (LX I think - no kidding, I think - I AM a girl, you know.)

It starts when it wants to...I'll go to the store, run in for a gallon of milk, come back out, and it won't start. I can start it no problem if I wait anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. Any ideas?

Well I donno about anything but what you just described happens to my 90 Ford F150 pickup it has a mind of its own. I donno maybe check out your terminals on your battery or maybe your fuel filter.

Have you tried the Men's Forum? Anywhere you have lots of men talking cars like they do in there you're bound to find a few thousand experts on any engine problem LOL

Is that a fuel injection car? Injectors might need cleaning... heard about this is Civics before.

If the starter is working okay, and it’s just the engine won’t start I would suggest pulling up the carpet on the front passenger side of the vehicle where the floor slopes up. When you remove the carpeting you'll find a metal plate with a window in it. Through that window not only can you see the computer but you can also see a red LED. With the key on see if the LED is flashing, if it flashing the computer is providing a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).Some Honda’s of that age with starting problems (only when hot) that will set and ignition output signal code. If this code is present you may have and ignition module (Honda calls it an igniter) or a connection problem in that area.

Battery seems fine, according to Mike. He said something I don't understand (being a girl about car stuff and all) about how it's sounds like it might start but never has the 'turning over' sound?

I think it's the "igniter" but I haven't seen the car.Can you have Mike check to see if it's getting spark? I'm not a Honda expert. You may get more info here. http://www.honda-acura.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=92664

That happend a few years back with my old car, an 89 Toyota Camry, they replaced the starter and it was starting for awhile, a couple months, but then kept doing it again. I don't know whatever was wrong with it because the transmission blew after that and I got rid of it..lol

Trisha, I think Mike is right about it being an igniter and it should be checked out because eventually it may quit altogether on you. Take it somewhere reputable because it's not a cheap job. I could be wrong, but I regognize the symptoms.

Hugs
Ann

NO mens room for me, thanks.

I think Mike looked for that sparky type thing. I'll give him the link, let him look at it. I wanna win the lottery and buy a new car. Thank God we have a lottery in NC now.

Take it to the dealer, they've got a diagnostic computer they plug into a socket and presto, you'll know the problem. A fuel filter clog would manifest itself all the time. Sounds like a vapor lock if it shuts down and wont restart when hot, but it's cool outside now, so that's prob not it.

Honda's are notoriously reliable. Just spend a few bucks at the dealer, you could tinker forever and not figure it out. I'm on my 4th Accord right now. They all last 10 years or 200,000 miles, but I'm real easy on them and they get all the factory maintenance.

Thanks roadie. This one is over 10 years, well over 200,000, and the deadbeat that had it before me drove it hard.

OMG - Gooch. That's a horror story. I thought changing the alternator on the drive from NC to MA was bad.

HI trish,
I'm one of thos "girls" that think I can troubleshoot anything using the internet, books etc. I usually have no clue what I'm talking about and it makes my guy aquaintances roll their eyes.
But I've had a lot of luck by doing searches on the internet. You'll pull up links such as this
http://experts.about.com/q/814/1433203.htm
Just keep throwing in words that describe the problem
Good luck!
Cece

Mike looked at the three sites posted - he's excited about that second one Time2 posted...he thinks that might be just the problem, said it sounds exactly like what we have going on.

I'm glad I have all of you...AND that I don't have to drive to Time2 to have it looked at!

Tee Hee... looks a lot like my ex-husband's truck that I used to 'hijack' (innocently, of course.)

Only that one's shiny, that one's much newer, that one probably runs much better - but it's black, it's a Ford, and it's BIG. My boys loved watching people run across the street when they saw me coming in the BIG truck. I was thinking more like Ford Excursion...but that one, it'll do.

Is this an automatic? since you're a girl I would say YES? (kidding)
Try to start it in neutral the next time it happens, could be a nuetral saftey switch.

WOW that second link from time2 sounds fun! Start car, rev motor to 2500 rpm, turn off check this, disco that, Bet your glad you got a Honda!

It sounds like something electronic since it does work sometimes (Which can be the biggest pain in the boot!)

Good lcuk
