| A Message From An Appalled Observer: Passing on a message from a friend. I am appalled that this could happen just because it is not politically correct to mention God any more. If you agree send to those who can vote in the next election - I think it is about time we claimed our rights - we are now a minority in this country. We should have some rights by now. Thank you for listening to a veteran who didn't serve in WWII - I wasn't born - but I did serve and it was God first then Country. If that was the case we should start showing it. Thank you for the information MJ. Pastor John Who Gave them the Right! WE SHOULD HIRE A MONUMENT ENGRAVER TO GO TO ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY AND ADD THE MISSING WORDS ? A MESSAGE FROM AN APPALLED OBSERVER: Today I went to visit the new World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. I got an unexpected history lesson. Because I'm a baby boomer, I was one of the youngest in the crowd. Most were the age of my parents, veterans of "the greatest war," with their families. It was a beautiful day, and people were smiling and happy to be there. Hundreds of us milled around the memorial, reading the inspiring words of Eisenhower and Truman that are engraved there. On the Pacific side of the memorial, a group of us gathered to read the words President Roosevelt used to announce the attack on Pearl Harbor: Yesterday, December 7, 1941-- a date which will live in infamy--the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked. One elderly woman read the words aloud: With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph. But as she read, she suddenly turned angry. "Wait a minute," she said, "they left out the end of the quote. They left out the most important part. Roosevelt ended the message with "so help us God.'" Her husband said, "You are probably right. We're not supposed to say things like that now." "I know I'm right," she insisted. "I remember the speech." The two looked Dismayed, shook their heads sadly and walked away. Listening to their conversation, I thought to myself, "Well, it has been over 50 years. She 'S probably forgotten." But she had not forgotten. She was right. I went home and pulled out the book my book club is reading --- "Flags of Our Fathers" by James Bradley. It's all about the battle at Iwo Jima. I haven't gotten too far in the book. It's tough to read because it's a graphic description of the WWII battles in the Pacific. But, right there it was on page 58. Roosevelt's speech to the nation ends in "so help us God." The people who edited out that part of the speech when they engraved it on the memorial could have fooled me. I was born after the war. But they couldn't fool the people who were there. Roosevelt's words are engraved in their hearts. Now I ask: WHO GAVE THEM THE RIGHT TO CHANGE THE WORDS OF HISTORY?? Send this around to your friends People need to know before everyone forgets. People today are trying to change the history of America by leaving God out of it, but the truth is, God has been a part of this nation, since the beginning. He still wants to be... And He always will be! MAY GOD BLESS YOU! IF YOU CAN READ THIS, THANK A TEACHER. IF IT'S IN ENGLISH, THANK A VETERAN.

I went to see Plymouth Rock.. you know the rock the pilgrims stepped onto upon arriving in the new world? Well I noticed it's got a big crack in the middle of it and was mortared together. I asked my brother in law ( a native of New England) "Say, what happened to Plymouth Rock, it's cracked!" He said "oh yeah, they broke it when they moved it in from way out on the cape" Evidently they moved it into Plymouth Mass. to attract more tourists... I felt that I had been duped by my history books as well and I was!

I'm all in favor of keeping history straight; however, separation of church and state is a cornerstone of our constitution. That's because our founders were fleeing religious persecution, and the folks who wrote the constitution thought it best to allow people to believe in whatever they damn well please. A big part of why I bailed from Christianity is because I didn't like it crammed down my throat. Religion is great stuff, but sometimes it gets a bit nuts, and it helps if we're free to say whatever we want about it. |

I hope you don't mind, but I know a few people who would be interested in this. I copied it and sent it to my e-mail and sent to some friends.

I'm not trying to start an argument, but if we're free to say whatever we want, how come we're not free to openly speak about God??? I don't think the issues is about religion, I think it's about tailoring history to best attract the most amount of people. Whether it's your religious belief or not, those words were apart of his speech, and should have been included but were omitted to please the masses. I'm just a little bothered that those who do believe in God are pushed away and shun these days, because for some reason, our faith offends others. Yet those who are offended by seeing these words are the first to harp on about the first ammendment. Seems a little off to me. Just my opinion. Take what you like, leave the rest. Much love!!!!!

re the misquote- it was cut off prior to the end of the sentence, hence the speaker's complete thought/statement is altered- by 4 words which were there to complete his original statement. Leaving out parts of history and/or changing actual statements is 'cramming one's belief down the throat'- it denies the hearer the dignity and the right to decide for oneself what they think about what this President had to say.

Divine Providence is also at the heart of the founding of our country. Separation of Church and State is there to prohibit the establisment of a State religion. The primary purposes are twofold... 1) To allow us the freedom to exercise our various religious beliefs without fear of persecution. It was never intended to stifle our belief in God, (or if you'd prefer, your Higher Power as you understand him). 2) To prevent the type of internal conflicts that have plagued Europe (still to this day) over what were usually simple dogmatic differences. Catholics versus Protestants -- Anglicans versus Episcopalians -- Christians versus Jews -- Quakers versus Shakers. It seems to me that the time to take up the "separation of Church and State" argument would have been at the time FDR made the speech -- and if you ask me the argument doesn't even apply. CENSORING the words of FDR... CENSORING the words of a President to his troubled people in a time of crisis... to me that is beyond appaling. It makes me want to go get a spray can and a good attorney, then walk up to the monument and finish the quote. Where's a "Million Man FINISH THE QUOTE March" when you need one?

I started to get riled up when I got the email.. but I know from past experience that I often overreact without checking the facts. http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/memorial.asp I can see how the confusion could have been generated. |
