| Dismember | Farewell to one of the great composers of our age.
Polish composer Henryk Górecki passed away today. One of my personal favorites, I'd tie him with Bach and Part for favorite composer of all time. His early works were based on serialism and were noisy and atonal. He, along with Penderecki and Lutosławski did a lot to bring Polish modern music to the forefront. Later in his career he moved to more sparse, minimalist compositions often with sacred themes. His best known work by far is his third symphony. A very slow building and emotional piece that pays honor to the victims of the Holocaust. It's also a piece that ties in with my sobriety. I listened to it several times a day when I was first getting sober, the most difficult time. It brought me a feeling of peace as well as made me re-evaluate how serious my problems were in the grand scheme of things. Hmm... Embedding fail. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miLV0o4AhE4 to hear the second movement.

Beatus Vir, Kleines Requiem, Symphony no. 2 and Totus Tuus are also really good pieces of his. He was supposed to be exhibiting a fourth symphony in the coming months, so rumors went. I'm really hoping it'll still get a public run.
