Recovery Tattoos?

I have seen AA and NA symbols and such tattoo'd on people before.

I was just curious if anyone here has one, how you came to the decision to get it, and if not, how do you feel about them?

I wouldn't get one - I'm too much of a commitment phobe. Knowing me, I'd get one and then not like it a few weeks later or start to want some other design. Plus, I always think of how they might look okay now but not so much when I'm old and gray and my skin's all wrinkly!

White? I need to ask you, how does white look in a tattoo? I am going to get my childrens birth flowers on my leg in March and one of the flowers are white. I have never seen a white tat before.

Any way you can post a pic?

I always wanted a tattoo and I told myself I could get one if I got sober. So I am getting one on day 100. The question I Have is what criteria should I look for in a shop?

Regarding white tats...watch the Matrix and follow the white rabbit...lol!

I have a bad tattoo on one ankle because I didn't do my homework. The guy said he had done the ones on his legs and I took his word for it. I was young and on drugs and so was he. Very stupid.

I suggest if you see someone on the streets with a good quality tat, you ask them where they got it done. Most people don't mind talking about their tats! Or you could find a reputable shop and go in and ask to see their work. If you like what you see, ask if it would be possible for you to watch him/her do one.

Make sure they are clean!!! Make sure they are licensed!!!

I am having a friend do my next one. He and his wife are coming to So.Cal. from Salt Lake City, Utah and I'm getting it done at an event called "Spring Festival of LX's". It's an annual car show that will someday be as big as Sema!

Ooooooh! I am so excited!

white is used to add a bit of "pop" to the tattoo, i have never seen a fully white tat. I will more than get something that symbolizes my sobriety. but my sobriety is to young at this point

Hi Im Sharon and Im
an Alcoholic.

By the grace of my HP
and people like you here
in SR I havent found it
necessary to pick up a
drink of alcohol since
8-11-90.

For that and you I am
truely grateful.

Tattoos......

Got my first one at 50. Yah..!

Since then Ive aquired a
good selection of them.

Change in life, relocated,
remarried. Freedom in
recovery.

Beautiful roses, blossoms,
butterflies, crosses, Eagle,
birds, words, wings.....

Lots of vibrant colors from
reds, blues, greens, orange,
yellows, black, purple.

Just recently at my 20yr.
sobriety mark, I got my
recovery AA tattoo.

After careful consideration
I made my descision to get
it.

It is on my top right back
shoulder blade.

The picture is of a motorcycle
wheel with spokes and an angel
wing attached to it representing
protection on the road.

The center spoke has the AA
symbol. Words of Serenity,
Courage and Wisdom scripted
around the picture along with
my sobriety date...8-11-90.

I can't see it unless I look
at it in the mirror, yet I now
its there.

Today Im going back to
have some rays of sunshine
added to my Eagle on my
top right front shoulder.

Right above the Eagle I have
the words ...Live to Ride Ride
to Live but stands alone....

It needs something to connect
all the tats on that top arm so
Im going to a new artist to add
rays and whatever she thinks
will make it look good.

Im excited to see what she
has come up with for my 1pm
appointment.

This tat will be my last before
my husband and I head out to
the Grande Canyon next week
for our Honeymoon trip.

Recovery should be celebrated
each day we stay sober and I
am.

I've a few tattoos. I wouldn't call any of them specifically 'recovery' tattoos, but a few of them have messages I felt I needed to remember or signify lessons I learned (usually the hard way). For eg. I've a tattoo behind my ear (on my head) with a message I knew I needed to always keep in the back of my mind. I also have a tattoo in my ear which symbols the period of life (five years) in which I learned to listen, after that period ended in a single night in which my life was saved. I don't regret any of them anymore than I regret the events / things they signify happening.

I've a list of five tattoos right now because I haven't the money to get the damn things transfered from paper and my former tatooist (who never charged) no longer lives nearby. *sigh

When I'm a year sober I would love to get a recovery/knitting tattoo, but I don't know what the design will be. Maybe something straight edgy.

I had this done on my one year sober bday. It was a rework of an old one.

Man, I am so against recovery tattoos. I can't even explain why. I have eight tattoos on me now, and while I adore them all I just can't see recovery as tattoo material.

My whole body is tattooed...much to the dismay of my mum and dad, who find tattoos and piercings on their little girl appalling. I've got several tattoos that represent not just my addiction but my self-destructive nature in general and my constant struggle to keep those urges at bay. My tattoos remind me that sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but I never give up trying to find peace.

I've got "I will not regret my past nor wish to shut the door on it" on my left forearm. So that I never forget. It's my avatar to the left.

I rather like your tattoo, john. I've got some words tattooed on me but they represent a cynical mindset I no longer embrace... Like "die young and save yourself"... I used to be rather arrogant about my addiction
