| Dave Robincheaux, anyone?
James Lee Burke has a series of books (probably about 20) featuring a hard boiled police detective in Sourthern Louisiana by the name of Dave Robincheaux. Besides spinning a good tale, the protagonist is a recovering, 12-stepper alcoholic with a very interesting perspective on life and living.

I've read and enjoyed them all. There is a movie based on a James Lee Burke novel directed by Bertrand Tavernier. Must have went straight to DVD. Never came to the theatres here. |

I know that In the Electric Mist With Confederate Dead was a movie starring Tommy Lee Jones who really fit the part. Its available on DVD because I rented it. I believe Jones is scheduled to make another movie in the series.

Heaven's Prisoners, the 2nd book of Robicheaux series, was made into a movie. It starred Alex Baldwin as Dave Robicheaux. I've read and enjoyed all of his books. |

I just finished "A Morning For Flamingos". I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me and I actually enjoyed it. This book was loaned to me by someone who knows me better than I thought, since he made no mention of the fact that Robicheaux is a recovering boozer! |

I was going to post about Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels, but I see others have already discussed his writing. I'm a a fan of Burke's books. The film Heaven's Prisoner , based on Burke's novel of the same title, lead me to his writing. I especially enjoy Burke's description's of Southern Louisiana's landscape, architecture, culture and social mores. And I'm a fan of the articulate, introspective but gritty character of Dave Robicheaux. Sobriety and AA themes are a thread that run throughout his books. If you enjoy good detective novels, Burke's books are worth checking out. |

I have read a lot of him. I like him, but about two thirds of the way through he always over-writes. |
