| same planet...different world | The Red Tent ... and ... Lovely Bones
Two amazing books. not 'chick' books by any stretch. Anyone read these? They both blew me away. The Red Tent is about Rebecca's sister, Dinah - the one who got raped in the Bible but it's from her perspective ... fascinating read. Not religious a teensy bit - historical and amazingly well written. I almost didn't read it - but Oh my GOD I'm glad I did! The other one - The lovely bones ... about a girl who is murdered, and how her Spirit watches her family continue after her death. Powerful. Neither is wishy washy, and do NOT pick up The Lovely Bones without time to finish it. You LITERALLY can't put it down. I haven't had that experience with a book since the night I brought home "Jurassic Park".

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{live}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} so good to see ya! I'm just 'treading water' right now with a Kellerman thing .... waiting for that next great read to grab me - I've wanted to read that 'When you're engulfed in flames' by Sedaris ... everything I've heard read out of it cracks me up... the book store doesn't have a paperback issue yet.

Lovely Bones was amazing, finished it in two days. Tried to read her next one but it was too intense for me. But I loved Bones. If you liked that ones, you should check out some of Jody Picoults books, not as intense but you might like her books. : )

Barb, Loved the Red Tent, also. I read that while I was on a trip to Greece and with that back drop, it also blew me away! I'm going to recommend a book I absolutely loved: Peony in Love by Lisa See. It's out in paperback. Since you enjoyed the two books that involved life from a "spirit's" perspective, this book will not disappoint. In no way is this a weird book, but rather a beautiful story about a girl in ancient China and her family. Trust me.....and let me know..... |

*writing down the titles and authors* great! I *love* chick books - but not the sappy, we're all only women' kind of crap books. Like Toni Morrison's early stuff.

NO! It's called The Betrayal' by Kathleen Oneil Gear and michael W Gear. Sorry. it's jsut too much to remember. I don't know if itll be any good or not. it only took reading about three of the 'people of the river books to get their style and format of writing ... got way too predictable too fast for me. so - we'll see. I think they're both scholars and all that so it'll be something to learn about anyhow.

I enjoyed "mercy" by Jodi Picoult. Like, Barb, I become quickly bored if I can pick up a style repeated and etc. I do still want to read 19 minutes by her. Do "The Reader" Barb, I am nagging...but it is really not to be missed.

I just read The Lovely Bones and was disappointed with it. For some reason it felt like a different person started writing it about 3/4 of the way through it. It was a interesting book I heard that the people who liked the book don't like the movie. From the trailers I've seen it looks like it is about the dad not the girl. |

I decided not to watch the movie. I got way more from reading the book. I didn't notice what you're talking about... although like in almost all books it does have it's rough edges at times. at the same time - I kinda LIKE that aspect showed she was just a kid at heart. (for me)

I read "The Lovely Bones" - what a page turner! Very moving. I heard the movie is good, but that it has not met all expectations. I'm going to check it out anyway. The scenes where Susie is in the in-between look gorgeous! "The Red Tent" - I started but did not finish. I don't know why. Probably the drinking. I will pick this up again. It's nice to have a bunch of good books lined up |

I've just added Lovely Bones into my 'To Read' stack and I will get the Red Tent tomorrow when I return The Book Thief to my bookstore. I bought it 2 days ago and then discovered I already had a copy in my stack!! |

I saw the movie "The Lovely Bones" and it was better than I thought it would be. I think I appreciated the book a little more also. I will have to add the Betrayal to my list. The Red Tent is waiting at the library for me. I certainly can't buy all these books that people say are good. Thanks. I've read some really good books that people here have suggested. |
