Well, so I'm posting on here to try to make this decision real, well, at least in cyberspace (which I guess is the whole world, really). I have a drinking problem. I've known this for at least 5 years, and made some half-a**ed attempts to do something about in the past but none of these actually involved quitting drinking. I'm not sure if I have hit bottom (I'm only 37) but my life is profoundly stuck. I'm miserable and cope only with drinking (which makes me more miserable). Also, I do really stupid things, like stay out late on work nights and then not show up to work, and in this economy, no one wants to lose their job.

I believe it's about self respect, and for me, getting some means saying I'm done with drinking, to myself, meaning it, and to the people I love. I know it will be a lot of work, but I've had glimpses of the happiness that awaits me on the other side. I've looked up an AA meeting in my area and am planning to go tomorrow night. I will report back on how it goes. I am hopeful, even if I feel like crap today (guess why...).

    How did the meeting go?

I think it's great you're working on the things in your life you don't like, such as alcohol. I think it's harder with alcohol because we can tell ourselves we're just relaxing after work or having a few with the pals on the weekend.

But recognizing it's not what you want is really great. And I don't think you have to hit bottom before turning things around. I think some people have to, but not everyone. I really hope you continue moving back up and never have to find a bottom.
