| My biker fiance
My fiance is a biker - recovering binge drinker - trad player who can drink all night and still haul himself off to work in the morning. I love him to bits but can't keep up. Being in Ireland the culture is all based around the pub and today I feel so bad. But can't tell him. Just needed to talk to somebody who would understand?

Saffron, I haven't lived in Ireland, but I've been there often enough to know what you're saying about pubs and social life. However, I also know that being in a pub does not obligate me to drink. You say your man's a "recovering binge drinker." Does that mean he still drinks? If your man's still at it, and wants to stop, AA works. It's not the only way to quit drinking, but it's kept me sober and happy for over 28 years. In that time I've traveled through Ireland's pub culture and biker scene, to motorcycle rallies and parties all across the American West, to concerts and family gatherings, and all without taking a drink or drug. My wife and I are involved in the live music scene here, and count amongst our friends a number of musicians who are in recovery. Being sober doesn't stop them from enjoying life, anymore than it's stopped me. There are AA groups all over Ireland. I've attended meetings just off Grafton Street in Dublin, and in the city of Donegal. There's also an equally powerful fellowship called Al-Anon, for the families and loved ones of problem drinkers. Whether or not your man stays sober, you might want to check them out. You have come to a place where people understand. I hope you'll keep coming back!
