| Rigorous Honesty
My youngest daughter is a regular blood donor for the Red Cross. Today she went to give blood, and I thought I might as well start as a donor too because it's a way to give back to the community. Guess what? Even though I haven't used IV drugs since June of 1986 and was tested for HIV in 1988, I am permanently flagged as a deferred donor. I answered all of their questions honestly as I have been taught to do. For a minute, I thought I was going to cry because I asked the gal if she was kidding since I haven't used a needle since 86 and don't have AIDS. Then I realized this was a consequence of my addiction, and so what if it's decades later? The lady at the check-in table saw the disappointment in my face, and told me she is always short on volunteers and they could sure use an extra hand next time Red Cross is here. So come August, I'll help wherever they can put me, whether it's in the kitchen serving meals after folks have donated, or doing check-in or whatever. I can still give back to the community, and that's what it's all about.

| Just showing up is half the solution. Just show up and be of service. Just show up, willing. Just show up and your path may just show itself.

| ![]() I imagine that was a shock. Although I have had a few experiences where I felt as though I was being punished, (for a lack of a better word) for being an addict. But then I realize . . . there are far more reasons to be grateful. Glad to see you didn't let it deter you from your original intent . . . to give to those in need. God Bless, Judy

There are some amends that I can never make. Some deal with people I don't even know and never knew in the first place. Part of my working step nine is being a volunteer in corrections. Also I go to two small town nursing homes and help with some music. The big book says that our real purpose is to be of maxium service to God and our fellows. Almost anybody can give blood (I can't), not everybody wants to serve. Good job.
