Lets talk about Tires

Im running the stock dunlop 402Fs on the Ultra. They are ok, i guess, I check the pressure regularly. I dont think that they hold up real well, after about 5000 miles they still have plenty of tread, but they feel a little squirrley sometimes, not all the time, mostly on resurfaced roads.
Id just like your OPINIONS on the tires that are out there.

Dunlop HDs, keep tread real well and stay rigid on the hub well too-for me.

OEM on my bike was Dunlop. Lasted about 12,000 before I noticed major slipping in the rain.
Max went about 10,000 before the slipped right up from under me in the rain.

Thing about the Max though... They seem to hold much better before the wear starts to show. Tight corners at 60MPH on the highway and they still hold great. Full upright (center of the tire) is where I find they wear out fast.

3 sets of tires...50,000 miles.
The Max classics I have on now won't pass inspection with about 16,000 on them.
Short rides in dry weather is all I do now till I get new tires.

Chris,
I'm on my 3rd set of tires on my FLHX. Went from OEM to MET's back to OEM. I've also tried Avon's. The reason I went back to OEM's is because there just wasn't really any bang for the buck.
I get between 8-10K out of the rear's and around 15K out of the front's. You can strech that a little with an aftermarket tire, but I don't think it's worth the extra $. You would be better served to stick with the OEM's and just shorten your change out times. My bro's all run top end tires but they get squat out of them for miles. But I don't think you are doing many burnouts on that Ultra. I'm not saying it can't, I'm just saying you don't.
Love and Respect,
TB

Ifn ya'll only knew...I have been known to push my T-sport to it's edge on occasion as well as some racing. I run OEM for a couple reasons. They have been tested on my bike (often) and work very well.
Don't know the mileage, (I go by seasons) this front lasted 3 years, I just put the 3rd back on last week, (need to replace the front). Rule-o-thumb; 2 backs to 1 front.

I have run stickier tires and gotten half the life for 20% more $, front and back.
I have run harder (longer lasting) tires and been in-confidant (frickin scared) and still paid more money (replaced w/OEM within 500 miles).

Dunlop HD 401 B/W

For some reason, raised white lettering on a Sport/Cruiser just doesn't work.
Mebbe ona Ole' Skool Bagger or Bobber. But then, I would just go with w/w.

I'm with Jazzed. OEM and 2 backs to 1 front. The softer Metzlers et al, wear out too fast and cost big bucks. The harder high milers are too darn dangerous up here in the frozen north. Even with the OEM Dunlops, I've had to learn the hard way ( like I learn everything else...LOL ), that in the spring & fall, the air temperature and deceiving sunshine, are not accurate indicators of pavement temperature. I dropped Annie a couple falls ago by crackin' her throttle too much in the apex of an on-ramp. Cold pavement = throttle caution now....LOL

I run the Dunlop 400 Series front and rear on the FXR. I prefer Avons for the shovel - they make that old-school square-tread high-profile Mileage Master I like for the rear, and a nice ribbed 21" for the front. I get excellent hold, stopping power, and mileage from both brands.

The BMW wears Dunlop SportMax tires - a stickier tire for hard cornering. A waste of money, I'm learning, since I spend 'way more time upright than leaning, and flatten the center tread before I've even worn the nubbins off the sides. Next time I buy new shoes for the Beemer I'm going to shop for a harder compound tire, and try to get more than 9K out of it!

Had two new tires put on my Road King today. Stayed with the stock Dunlop HD white wall tires. I got 8,000 miles out of my back tire and 15,000 miles out of my front. I could have gotten another 2,000 out of my front, but didn't want to be on the road in Texas when I needed it. Nothing wrong with the Harley dealers in Texas, it's just that I want to make several trips this summer with new tires.

We still on for August?............anybody?

Got another buddy I ride with, 25 years AA, 03 softail classic, who might be interested. He's been to Deals Gap before.

I was flipping through a motorcycle magazine the other day when I came across an ad for Michelin's "Pilot 2" tires. Curious, I went to their web-site (pretty user-friendly, BTW) and found that they make a two-compound tire for bikes like my BMW, with a hard tread in the center and softer, stickier tread on the rolled edges. That's supposed to mean better mileage on straightaways, with good sport performance in hard curves.

I'm just afraid to ask what they cost!

I put on two new Dunlop 402's a month ago or so. Yesterday I put on some chrome bag guards that wrap around the bottom of my RK Classic hard leather bags. Here's the kicker, I put on a chrome cup holder. 40 bucks no less.

Having a 2007 Road King would not even be possible with out my sobriety. I am so grateful to be learning how to live life one day at a time sober. I don't want to go back to the way it was. God is doing for me what I could not do for myself..........toad
