So I went to the AA meeting I told y'all about a few weeks ago. Meeting went good, local small township meeting, yadda yadda yadda. I had really felt at home here, and there was some good sharing going on, even though I surmised that not a whole lot of people there worked the steps, which is what I (selfishly) think that I really need. Anyhow, we were nearing the end of the meeting and the "chair" or whatever you call him, brought up this guy who he called "biker Larry". He proceeded to say that this guy was a Harley biker, long haired, and was an AA fanatic, and that basically we don't need this type at our meetings. I was aghast. I, of course, promptly went into the throw my HD embroidered purse on the table and just kind of looked at him. I was really freakin' offended. And I thought to myself, LOL, what would LILBIT do? I, however, don't have her guts, so I just left kind of yanked at the end of the meeting, doing NO service work, shame on me. I was also kind of aghast at the guy who went out during the middle of the meeting and smoked a j and came back in. I obviously need to find a new meeting, but WTH??? There are some people there that I really respect and love, but I am coming to find out that none of them have worked all of the steps. I am very disillusioned. And frankly, I am PI@@ed about the "biker Larry" comment; I don't think that I personally know him , but I am just yanked about the stereotype. So what if he has long hair? So what if he is a biker???? Who the heck cares? OMG, I am so mad right now. I have experienced this "discrimination" in restaurants, but at an AA Meeting?? ![]() |

That's not an AA meeting, or at least it won't be for long. If an older member was there, they need to be responsible enough to correct the member that is clueless. " The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking" The one who spoke such nonsense may have a right to be there too, but he should have been corrected. I would find a meeting that is supported with older members. Where does your sponsor go? |

Two things we can do... Find another meeting or stay and become part of the solution. The other meeting is easier to handle and when first starting out in recovery, I would pick that way. To stay and be part of the solution would require being an example and getting involved deeper with the business side of things in some cases. Just being there and being an example or getting deeper involved... you could be looking at a year before real change is truly noticed. Look for a real meeting because that one sure doesn't sound like any AA I know.

You will find that not all A.A. members are well. The trick is to be able to pick out the members who are healthy, due to going to meetings regularly, having a sponsor, joining a home group, reading the Big Book, working the steps and hang with them and try not be too judgemental of the members who are not. Us alchoholics can't be fooled, we see very clearly...One of my first sh*t-kicker sponsors taught me that if I wanted to learn how to be an eagle, I couldn't flock with the buzzards. Check out every meeting in your area and join the one that you most feel comfortable in. Don't let a couple of buzzards deter you from your mission of learning to fly like an eagle....

This weekend I am at Institutions Weekend, Area 39, in Kansas City. Last year when I was here I heard Tom I. speak. Tom is the only convicted felon who served time in a maxium security prison to become the head warden in his state of all the prisons. His story was in the Grapevine last year..........any way here is what I heard Tom say. Share this with me: "If you don't hear what you want to hear at meetings, say what you want to hear." I might add that our words should be tempered with love.
