Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic. By the Grace of my HP and people like you here in SR, I havent found it necessary to pick up a drink of alcohol since 8-11-90. For that and you I am truely grateful. What a AWESOME BEAUTIFUL SOBER DAY it was yesterday here in Baton Rouge Louisiana. The day began with driving down the highway and seeing an unbelievable amount of bikers out on the road. It seemed as tho the nice weather had allowed many bikers to emerge from their hiding places..... My friend and I hopped on his Harley and we drove to the Harley store where many bikers had gone for a monthly meeting. Seeing all those bikes in the parking lot made me feel excited inside. It was like entering into a new life of new people a new world i had never experienced before.....a new community of folks i had never tapped into before. We spent a little time browsing amongst the Harley merchandise with me emerging out of the store with my first Harley jacket, glasses and shirt.... Im pretty sure I was styling according to my friend as he seemed to be impressed at his new "Harley Princess Swan" as he calls me. At lunch time we stopped for a bite where a gentlemen stopped at our table to compliment us. He spoke about how we reminded him of the days when he had his own bike and was proud to have a lovely lady to ride with him. Maybe seeing the 2 of us sparked a newer interest in getting back on a bike as I told him that its never to late to experience that joy again in his life. Anyway..... As i continue familiarizing myself with the bikers way of life, I wanted to know what kinds of people do u run into while out and about on the road. Do u stay close to a recovery pack of bikers where you feel comfortable? Or do u mingle with those out side recovery? Me, I am soooo interested and anxious to meet bikers in recovery, mainly because our recovery program is a common bond we would share. In due time my friend says before we connect with those wonderful awesome people. Share ur own ESH with me and others who wish to know more about bikers in recovery. Thanks for letting me share.

I have met some pretty cool people on the road. Back in the early 90's I left Seattle and rode to Daytona and back riding a little over 7'000 miles I was on the road for 4 months.. I met a few people that were criss crossing also. The nicest and coolest experience I ever had tho was when I was working up in Canada and I was heading back to Wa. About 15 mile from the ferry landing my bike broke down and it was about mudnight. A lady saw me on the side of the road and told me her old man rode and she went back to her house and got him. We didn't get the bike fixed so we pushed it about a 1/4 mile to their house. They put me up for the night and fed me breakfast the next morning. I called someone at home and the came with a van and we loaded up the bike and left. I was very grateful for her stopping that nght since I was about 75 miles from home. HR |

I ran out of gas one Sunday morning, a few miles from a small Central Texas town, and was pushing my bike up a long hill, hoping I might be able to coast down the other side. I'd stopped for a breather when a middle-aged woman in a Cadillac - big Texas hair and all - stopped to ask if I needed help. I told her I was out of gas, so she drove to town, dug an empty Zima bottle out of the gas station's trash can, filled it with gas, brought it back to me, and then wouldn't take a dime for her troubles. Turned out her husband, the Baptist preacher in town, used to ride a GoldWing! ![]() Another Sunday morning, enroute from Austin to Estes Park, CO, I ran out of gas nine miles east of Childress. There was nothing but flatlands out there - not even a bush to hide my bike behind - so I was pushing it along the shoulder when I came to a house. A woman was working in her yard, so I called out to her, and asked if she had any gasoline I might buy. She wasn't sure, so she fetched her husband, who thought maybe he had some in a can somewhere. After searching for it, and cussing and fuming a bit, it turned out the can was dry. I offered to pay him to take me into Childress to get some gas. I could tell he didn't want to, but he grudgingly agreed, and we got in his truck and took off. On the way in we started talking a bit - mostly politics, if you can imagine that! - and by the time we got back to his place we were fast friends. Again, he wouldn't take a dime for his trouble. There are plenty of other stories like that from my years of travel. I remember those selfless acts whenever I stop to help a stranded stranger. It's the only way I can pass along the kindness shown to me. I realize that doesn't answer your question about who we mingle with, Sharon, so I'll post more on that later.
