| New Year's Traditions
As mentioned elsewhere, Jackie and I had a great New Year's Eve out with friends. A few minutes past midnight, our host served each of us a small helping of black-eyed peas - a Texas tradition that brings good luck in the coming year. Then, when we got home, I took part in a personal tradition of mine: going to the garage to lay hands on all three bikes, thanking each of them for being a good and faithful steed during the past year. ![]() The other tradition is to do on New Year's Day those things I want to do more of in the coming year. So far I've written some things, ridden a motorcycle to an AA meeting, and spent some time helping Jackie redecorate the house. Who knows what I might get up to before the day is done! ![]() What are y'all's traditions?

It has become a tradition to sit at home and watch old TV shows. 3 stooges marathon or some other programs. Amature night is always a good night to stay home. I also let a few know that if needed...I am available if they need a ride. I would rather go out at 3 AM and pick someone up then see them try to drive home.

Black eyes peas is pretty much a tradition everywhere in the southern USA as far as I can tell. Also we were always told to have some type of greens, for prosperity in the new year. We had my favorite, spinach.

Since I've been sober, 9 years, each New Years Day has been spent cleaning the VFW Hall and hauling my musical equipment home. Some how I have inherited the job of organizing the new years eve celebration. It all starts around 8 am new years eve. I load my equipment (praise God I am able to drive this year) and take it to the hall, then I go to walmart and shop for the party........ food, pop, snacks, plates, napkins, etc. Then to a couple of meeting places for the coffee pots and coffee. I meet with a couple of other musicans in the afternoon and we run through some of the music for the evening. Then home for a couple of hours. Back to the hall around 6pm to get everything ready to start at 8 pm....we usually jam around till starting time. We eat and jam till 10:30, then we have a candle light meeting until mid-night. I stay and pick up trash until about 1 am. Early new years day I have breakfast with my best non-aloholic friend from 35 years ago who I play music with, and then he heads back to KC. Then I go to the VFW hall and load equipment. This year I hired a youth from my church to help. Then we go back and sweep, mop, straigthen tables and chairs, and haul out the trash. I take the AA coffee pots back to the AA meeting places and then home sometime after noon...........it wears me out, but I have done it every year and I seems to be part of my recovery. I try and complain but no one will listen except God.........the bottom line is that service, giving back what was freely given to me keep me sober. "Freely ye have received, freely give." My buddy Jimmy (RFL 07) came by this afternoon on his scooter for a ride...I was not home......it warmed up to 31 degrees today with a bone chilling north wind. He said he froze his butt....... I'm headed to a friends house now to score some black-eyed peas. So tired today.......so sober today........so grateful today.
