Talking New Guy

Hey! Sweet! A "Bikers in Recovery" zone -- I dig it!! My name is Eric...road name: Slash. It's cool to have found you all...and ...OK..here's the deal -- My first bike was a gift to myself when I entered recovery 11 years ago - I love to ride my scoot. I love being sober. I recently got together with a couple guys who share these passions and we started a local (Utica, NY) chapter of A.R.M. (Association of Recovering Motorcyclists). ARM is an international brotherhood (NOT an MC as we claim no territory) that loves to celebrate and share recovery and loves to ride bikes. I do not want to go further into it here..as I am not here to be a commercial...but if you live between Albany and Syracuse and are interested in learning more - please email me through my profile. Thanks -- I am really excited to have found this li'l corner of the internet!

Hello Slash glad to have you aboard.
There are a few who pull up to the curb here. I am sure you will find they are great people to know. I will be passing your way come Labor day I hope. Some nice riding in NY.

I took the e-mail out as we try not to encourage people putting e-mails in a public post.

Welcome Slash, glad you're here! I always appreciate hearing from other parents, and how cool that you're an addictions counselor too!

Bouldin was my home group when I sobered up in '78, and I was one of the bikers there for a long time. I moved away in the mid-'80s, and when I came back in the late '90s Bouldin was a much different place. Sad to say, I haven't felt welcome there since.

I visit other groups in the area, as I'm able, but I can count the riders I've seen on one hand, and those were either flaky as hell or downright unfriendly. Maybe it's my deodorant?

My current home group is Living Faith, which was also a biker hangout back in the '80s. We used to have pancake breakfasts there on Sunday mornings, and the lot would be packed with bikes. Now there are just three or four riders who attend Sunday morning meetings with me. I don't know where the rest of the sober riders have gone, but I sure miss that camaraderie.

When were you down here? We probably know folks in common.

LOL, I'm glad I'm not the only one with those kind of experiences with some meetings.
I'll have to check my deodorant Bill.

Yeah, I don't know what the deal is. I'm always glad to meet other sober riders. I figure we have two wonderful blessings in common - recovery and motorcycles - and isn't it grand to be able to share them both with the same person?

Early in my sobriety, a friend told me my greasy ol' Harley was just another vehicle for carrying the message. I took that to heart, and try to bear it in mind. If I'm not welcoming others the way I'd like to be welcomed then I'm not using my bikes for the purpose my HP intended. We're not a "clique" or "club" - we're people trying to stay clean and sober a day at a time, and if I'm not being "the hand of AA" when others reach out, I'm just taking up space.

What a brilliant welcome! Thanks to you all...That is what I dig about recovery (one of the many things anyway) --

Bill J - I actually missed the heyday of Bouldin. I was a regular there in 1996. I got sober at the Westlake young person's meeting when I was 24. I spent hours upon hours at Flipnotics drinking coffee and Moonquake shakes... I worked at the Roadhouse Cafe on South Lamar until it closed.

Slash,

Even though I live north (35 & 183) I still make Westlake meetings on occasion. They have one of the better schedules in town. That's also the one place in town I've run into Bouldinites I knew 'way back when.

Oddly enough, it's also the place I've met some of the motorcyclists I mentioned above - the flaky and the attitudinally challenged.
