Off we go, into the wild blue... It's gonna hurt like the dickens, but tomorrow morning I get on a plane bound for Baltimore. I'm going to visit my terminally-ill mother, and help my sister deal with a family crisis. I don't want to go into details here, but I will ask prayers for my Mom, my sister, and her daughter. I'll be gone, and may be off-line, until mid-September, so let me thank y'all in advance for your kindness, good thoughts, and prayers. Oh, boy! Let's see what HP's got in mind for us this week! ![]()

Prayers go with you. Be ready for delays at the airport. Some are taking as long as 2 hours to get checked in.

At 9 months sober, I was still using my AA group as my HP. My sister called from Vancouver telling me I should fly out if I wanted to see Mom before she died. The doctor's had given her only a few months. She had been in an Alzeimer's hospital for about 3 years at that time. She hadn't been able to communicate, or even show signs of recognition when my Father, Brother or Sister visited her, for the previous 6 months. I flew out to Vancouver and my Sister picked me up at the airport. We decided to go straight to the hospital to see Mom. My Sister warned me that Mom was down to about 80 lbs., and would not be able to speak, or even recognize me. We walked into the day room, where all the patients were gathered. Mom was in the corner by the window, in a wheelchair, with a shawl draped around her. Her head was hanging down, oblivious to everything around her. Never had to face anything harder, then or since. I walked up and knelt down by my Mom and said "Hi Mom". She lifted her head and said "Hi Geordie". Hard to describe the feeling that ran up my spine. I talked with Mom for about 15 or 20 minutes and I was able to tell her that I had quit drinking and joined AA. She said, "Oh that's good Geordie", then she faded away again. She lived another year and never came out of it again. After talking to my Sister and my Sponsor when I went back home, it was pointed out to me that God had given my Mom and I that gift of 20 minutes. I allowed God in after that and have been working daily to stay connected ever since. How could I not? Even typing this story still gives me the same shiver up my spine and my eyeballs leak when I talk about it at meetings. Bill, I know how spiritual you are. God has a plan for you and your family and no matter how much pain is involved, you will emerge with the lesson HE has for you. Ain't it great that we can handle this stuff sober? Love ya brother. Stay close. | |

Thanks again, y'all. Here's a quick update: Sister and niece are in a safe place, and seem to be handling the transition okay. Her soon-to-be-ex is being a whiny, manipulative jerk, but he hasn't raised a hand to her yet, which was what I was most worried about. I think she's tough enough now to withstand the mind-games, and keep moving forward. Good to see her taking that initiative. Mom's just finished another round of chemo and radiation, but her latest MRI shows still more tumors popping up. It's like a deadly game of Whack-A-Mole! However, her spirits are good. She's even talking about making the trip to New Hampshire to visit my sister and niece - quite a trek for a woman in her condition, but she loves her kids (no accountin' fer taste, eh?) and gets a boost out of seeing us. I'm glad I went, glad I could be there for all three of them, but also very glad to be home! :andy:

Thank you, Gooch, Kym, and Rarly. All kind thoughts appreciated. Rarly, FYI, of the five attempts you made, I'm only seeing one pic; the one labeled "3rd try." Is that just me?
