| short-term memory loss after detox?
Hi, I'm sorry if I'm intruding or posting in the wrong place; my sister has just gone through detox and is having quite a time with short-term memory loss. Could that be a result of the detox she just went through? She's scheduled to enter a 30-day program shortly and we're really at a loss to explain the mental state she's in right now. If this is not a forum where I can get such information, could someone please direct me to a source where I can get some help? She's staying with my brother right now and is awaiting word on whether she qualifies for county assistance (she's indigent). If she can't get help that way, my brother (who has no medical insurance of his own) is going to pay out of pocket for her, from a loan he's able to get. We're a very close family and want to help her in any way we can. Please help, someone. Thanks! |

ST memory loss is very common in detox. most sites on the subject of withdrawal will mention mental confusion and memory loss as a symptom. about.com has some good info. It happened to me for about 4 days after I stopped drinking cold turkey. It was awful, but temporary. The good news is that it sounds like she has someone to take care of her.

I used lots of Vailium, Opiates, and Alcohol. When I first came into treatment I had NO memory. The detox was awful and I had OBSESSIVE thoughts that really distorted my thinking and memory. Every day it has gotten better. Unfortunately it just takes time. Exercise, as painful as it may seem, helps too. Drugs made me THINK I was smart and confident, when in reality, I was insane. Stay busy and time will heal those neurotransmitters. Anti-depressants are helpful too.

It does sound like this is a completely normal and transient symptom. But this is not a medical site, and even if it were, nothing could substitute for an experienced doctor's opinion based on a thorough hands-on checkup & assessment. I hope there's some way of obtaining that. best - Guy |
