| Let the River be Genesis (poem to a friend going to rehab)
I wrote this for a dear friend who is about to go into rehab. Hope it speaks to you. Thank you all for giving me a wonderful year... Let the River be Genesis You've tried to dissemble, deny and gainsay - tell lies of omission, commission and otherwise fog up the facts. But it's taxing to go on this way, and you can't anymore. Not that you know how to say the thing outright: I mean, this is death we are talking about and you don't want to shock or offend. Let me lend you a story: Imagine you once had a doll that you loved but outgrew - allowed it to fade and grow old on some shelf. Years later - now - you discover it cowering back in the dust of some corner - persisting as form but devoid of all feeling and self. Reeling, your mind conjures up stark remembrances - how you had hugged it and shoved it and loved it back when you were six. Now you find it waylaid on the banks of the Styx: lifeless and stuck in the cold morbid muck. Dis-membered, a voice cries: "Re-member, Re-member - fashion me back into breathing again!" Bones without soul: how to make it a whole? Maybe it's luck, or some natural gift you did not know you had, but you gather it up in your arms, wipe the mud off, and kiss the doll smack on its lips. And the river's no longer the Styx but the flow of a heart. Oh, the limits of parable - bad metaphor! I abjectly adore you and want you to live. You're the toy and the child and the man who is tired of whomping himself to oblivion: give it your all now, come back. Let 'rehab' be more than a matter of drugs: let the river be Genesis - rushing with love. |

Thanks for sharing that, Guy! I know that feeling of "soullessness" all too well. I hope your friend is doing better. Thanks for being here, too! Peace, love, and hugs, Eddie
