My husband recently entered rehab for alcohol addiction. I have a teenage son who is angry. How do I help him?

One of the first things the counselor at the hospital told me, was to tell the kids it is a GOOD THING dad is finally getting some help. But at the same time your son MUST BE TOLD IT IS OKAY FOR HIM TO HAVE THOSE FEELINGS OF ANGER!!! We often tell our children they should be FEELING differently, and that is just out and out wrong. Your son is old enough to be involved in the family therapy sessions at the treatment facility. Also, he is old enough to attend Alateen. This will help him tremendously, to realize none of this is his fault, plus it will help him to become a more healthy adult, without as much baggage as comes with being an adult child of an alcholic.
The huge concern i have these days is a person I know that works on a rehab unit says anymore, people get released once their vitals are stable, usually 3-4 days of detoxing then out they go. Of course they are recommended to do an outpatient program, but it sure has worked better in my situation when he was "locked up" for 30 days!! ha ha ha... Good Luck with this situation. If this is his first time in rehab, i know it is an exciting time, but also a very stressful time too. Take care of yourself and enjoy the peace you may be feeling in your home with him gone!

Al-Anon. Both yourself and your son should find a local chapter and start going ASAP. I believe there is a forum here that speaks to Al-Anon.

I agree with the previous poster, Pedaguogue. Al Anon...or Ala Teen if it's available...are the correct support system for your son.
