| ADD / ADHD and chemical dependancy
After 4 years of very active participation in A.A., I had another one of my "one bottle" relapses. 4 felony charges later I decided to give the psychologists a crack at determining my major malfunction... I was diagnosed with ADD, Anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive tendencies (ADD being the main culprit and the other two tend to rise out of ADD). Since treatment for the ADD and Anxiety began 3 months ago, I have had absolutely no desire to drink for the first time in my life (after all, it's pretty hard to tackle the 3rd step if you're obsessive compulsive I still attend AA meetings regularily, but I have been wondering if there are any statistics available as far as success in sobriety after maintaining successful treatment of ADD or ADHD. I am also wondering if inpatient or outpatient treatment for alcoholism should still be considered at this stage of the game. Thank you for your time! Todd |

Dear Toddarc. Good question. And one, really, that only you can answer. Do AA meetings help you? Do you relate to what you hear? Have you fond any solace and more than superficial guidance in the steps and suggestions? AA is for people who want it. If it's speaking to you, then presumably you want it. I'd stick around for a while and see how it feels. Your feelings - I can pretty much guarantee - are likely to change, so don't make any major decisions right now (and considering not going to AA is a major decision) and see what you think and feel as you continue the treatment for ADD and the program in AA for a good few months. pulling for you - & prayers - Guy |
