| Training to be an alcohol/drug abuse counsellor undefined Hi there, I am a recovering alcoholic and am interested in becoming an addictions counsellor. Would you have any pointers for me in regards where to look for training. Thanks Scottie959 |

hey Scottie: Here's what I would do. Use the google.com search engine and type "becoming a substance abuse counselor" and your state in the search box - this should take you to a relevant site to find out about getting certified where you are. Nearly every state requires certification as a substance abuse counselor - generally with a B.A. or other degree (such as MSW or graduate degree in psychology). I would also contact your local hospital or rehab center or health clinic or some well-known organization like Hazelden and speak with someone there about what it takes to become a counselor. Here's a general link from the NAADAC - national organization of addiction professionals - through which you may also get some leads: www.naadac.org/ Hope this helps. best, Guy |
