| my mom.
hi. I was wondering how do me and my sisters get my mom help. She has been drinking for the past 3 years, but does not admit it. She refuses to get help or talk to anyone about it. We are all ages 17-23 but all still live at home. She says that it is medication thats makes her like that. But we find bottles of alcohol in her room. We are not very good at approaching her about this since she seems to always be drunk, and we always seem to be fighting. thank you! Dave |

Dave - I know this is tough - and I hope your mom will 'wake up' and realize she needs help and she can get it. The first thing I'd advise is to find out where the nearest Alanon meeting is and attend it - listen to others who are dealing with loved ones' drinking problems, talk about your own situation. Out of this will come some ideas about how to approach your mom, perhaps with your sisters, to let her know that you can't ignore her drinking, to give her information about AA, and encourage her to go. But start with Alanon. It will help you to gain perspective about the disease of alcoholism that afflicts your mom. You can't change her behavior, but you can change how you deal with it. Alanon will help you do that. Also check out the Alanon forum on this site and post the message you posted here. I know you'll get some very helpful responses. prayers - Guy |
