| I want to live!
I am 28 y/o and have used drugs since I was about 16 or 17 years old. Primarily marijuanna, but also other drugs such as alcohol, morophine, oxycontin, percocet, xanax, atavan and the list just keeps on going. I quit using everything but marijuanna for the most part, having a benge maybe twice a year from the time I was 23 until April of this year. I had gastric bypass surgery and had complications which put me in the hospital on a dilaudid PCA pump for almost 2 months and liquid loratab for breakthrough pain after I came home. Shortly after, I had to have my left ovary removed at Duke University due to a dermoid cyst where I was given liquid morophine, dilaudid and for no unknown reason, methadone. Which came in handy later down the line when I ran out of the other stuff. But, again in October I found myself in the hospital for 2 weeks with severe abdominal pain and was treated with, yep...you guess another dilaudid pump. So basically, I have been on pain medication for several months now and have ran out of my last morophine sublingugal tab yesterday. I feel like absolute **** today!!! OMG I hurt all over. I keep fighting the urge to rush off to the hospital and get a shot, anything to make me feel better; but I know that if I do that, I'll still wake up in the morning feeling the same way I did today. I have been out of work for 4 days and will be damn lucky if I'm not fired on Monday. I really need some advice. Can I do this alone? Do I need to go to "rehab"?

I have heard about many people who get addicted to pain meds. I have a few times but was cut off by the Doctors. Sounds cruel but they did me a favour, I couldn't do it on my own, that's for sure. Uh, well, you could spill your guts to everyone about your addiction, I mean those people who actually GIVE it to you so they know what's going on. You may have to wean yourself then just stop. I mean decrease dosage for a time in steps then set a quit day, I guess. That's what I'd do. But I don't think I was ever really out of control with pain meds so you may want to totally disreguard my post. |

Dear Mandy, Hang in there -- I've recently been where you are. Due to back surgery, then a hysterectomy, then a broken ankle, I was on pain meds (Lortab) almost non-stop for three years. Just quit cold turkey a month and a half ago, and the back pain has returned. Since I currently have no insurance, I've been "white-knuckling" it, and it hasn't been easy. The first week was hellish but it"s getting better! What has helped the most is telling my husband and my closest friends If you have insurance, see your family doctor and tell him everything. He/she can address your physical symptoms (like low energy or jittery feelings, depression, sleeplessness, etc) Then go to a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Went to my first one yesterday and was really scared, but they made me feel so welcome and hearing there stories really helped. They also address all kinds of addictions, including alcohol. You don't even have to say your name or talk at all if you don't feel comfortable. You can't do this alone -- you need all the support you can get. I'm certainly not there yet, but I DO want to get better. Maybe you and I can help each other through this together! |

mandy the decision for rehab is yours i am coming off a 30 10mg lortab a day pill habit for two years, with xanax and ultram thrown in for good measure. i am still tapering off the xanax, but have not had any pain meds in seven days. i have done it alone, with four kids it's been hell, rehab would be a great option, but it can be done |

The only advice I can offer is to get a medical opinion about detox; your health situation sounds complex and merits real time medical care.
