Lexapro, Antabuse - SoberRecovery : Alcoholism Drug Addiction Help and Information

Greetings! I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but just thought to ask if you'd know of any danger in the interaction of an SSRI anti-depressant such as Lexapro, specifically, and Antabuse? Thank you for any input!

Kid! My Pharmaceutical reference shows no reference to an interaction between the two meds. Antabuse interacts BADLY with alcohol and with Propylene Glycol.

Not so good with Anticoagulants, bronchodilators. Lexapro is really

for one who has taken MAO inhibitors, or takes diet pills, anticoags, (even aspirin), NSAIDS, and other, similar, SSRI antidepressants, even herbals like St. John's Wort. Consult with the prescribing MD

or pharmacist to get more detailed info, or go to an online RX info site. Your pharmacist will generally cooperate with all needed info! Good luck! K

Just to be sure about your concerns, ask the doctor who is prescribing the medications.

Kid V and anyone curious-

The main thing to remember about disulfiram is that it decreases the rate of metabolism of certain drugs. And this means that any concomitant use of those drugs can get tricky because the serum blood level is increased.

A key example is phenytoin, or Dilantin. You can easily wind up with a toxic serum level of this stuff in your blood while using disulfiram (Antabuse), and it's specifically cautioned against at rxlist.com.

Other than alcohol of course, there are no specific contraindications otherwise, but to be safe, in the end you must follow up on Mark's advice.
