Question Question about Hair falling OUT!

My 24 yr old daughter is the addict in my life and I usually post on the
Naranon forum. However, I just thought I would ask here in case anyone
knows if certain drugs can cause hair to fall out.

When AD came here yesterday for dinner, Mr. M and I noticed that her
hair looked so different. He couldn't help himself and mentioned it
to AD. She always had such beautiful, long, think hair. She looked
like she was balding on the top and when he asked her about it, she
said that sometimes her hair just falls out in clumps!!! In fact, she pulled
on it, and a bunch of it came out in her hand. Mr. M was horrified!
He asked if she was going to see a doctor and that it wasn't normal for
hair to just fall out like that! She asked me what I thought was causing
it and I told her that she should see a doctor. (which I know she won't) But I also told her I thought it was either from something she was "ingesting" or something she was "lacking" in her system. (I left out the "maybe it's the drugs you take"!! scenario)

QUESTION FOR YOU ALL: What would be making her hair fall out like that
or thinning like it is? She wasn't too quick to jump on the idea of going
to the doctor, so I doubt that will be an option.

Thanks.
Hugs,
Marteen

thats a good question, I have the same problem, I was told it was normal to lose 50-100 strands aday, but most likely she is either lacking nutrients plus using drugs if not boh one or the other

She never had this kind of problem before and most of the females on both sides
have very thick hair. I always have and so does sober daughter. Just seems very
strange that it is happening now and so very noticeable. I have heard that
meth can cause your hair to fall out. She has come over here with her eyes dilated
so I know she is still using (plus her behavior) but I have no idea what she is
using.

I know there is not much I can do but I was wondering if anyone knew of this
happening with drugs or perhaps something she is missing in her system. And she
just had a baby in August.

I love her, I worry but I know that I am powerless.

Is she very thin or has she lost a lot of weight in a short period of time? Malnutrition can cause it. I know that women can also experience alopecia (the same balding that is more common in older men).

HI!

I know for me when I was using drugs, my hair loss became greater than the normal 50-100 strands per day. This is due both from the drugs and lack of nutrients and sleep deprivation. I am 90 days clean and my hair is finally starting to return to being normal.
I also had a baby in june and that is another reason you lose drastic hair amounts, your body is riding all the extra hormones and such.

Hope I helped somewhat and not confused you more.

daydream,

She actually gained weight when she was pregnant and now is losing it. But
not so fast that I have noticed it being drastic. And maybe she is just experiencing
balding. Yikes!

grumpy,
I know that AD has had a terrible time with her sleep. When she was really bad
on drugs, she would be up for hours and days at a time and then crash for days.
She is living with her baby's father's parents and I doubt they would tolerate that
with the baby. And yes, I'm sure her hormones have been going crazy after her
pregnancy. I am so glad you told me that your hair is returning to normal. That makes
me feel better. And congrats for your clean time! I will keep you in my prayers.

Hugs,
Marteen
