4:05pm. Headin' into a Mojave weekend.

Just for today...I'm gonna go through a little pain, to gain a lot of freedom.

I'm still in.

Thoughts & lots of hugs, for the room.

I apologize for any errors on the list.

Mythical, magical, and divine birds. Tonight’s bird is the loon, known in Europe as the diver, any member of the five living species of the genus Gavia.

My loon story: I’ve been fascinated by loons since I was 9 years old (maybe not coincidentally the same age when I started smoking marijuana and shortly before I started drinking). In Canada on a trip with my grandmother, I bought a book called The Inland Whale, Native American stories collected and retold by Theodora Kroeber, an anthropologist and the mother of Ursula K. Le Guin. (I think I was confused and thought Le Guin was the author, because her name was mentioned on the back of the book.) One was the story of Loon Woman, a Native American story found among 8 tribes in Northern California, with many variations. It has to do with a sister who tricks or forces her brother into incest. As a result of this violation of the taboo, their blameless parents and siblings all die in a terrible fire. The first step towards the sister’s transformation into a Loon is when she finds in the ashes of the first the charred hearts of her dead family, and makes herself a necklace. In this picture, you can see the necklace of the Common Loon:

The brother flees rather than kill his own sister, but years later he encounters her again, recognizing her from far away by her strange way of singing to herself, part laugh part cry. This is the sound known as the tremolo of the Common Loon: Audio: Hear the calls of the common loon | syracuse.com.

He hunts her down and finds her doing “a strange stiff dance, flapping her arms and turning her head from side to side” (Kroeber, 1963). You can see the loons “dancing” in this video – it’s actually a territorial display performed by males: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr18oGQ9Aus.

Kroeber wrote that the tale of the Loon Woman was powerful and macabre, unusually audacious among Native American stories in its characterization of the psychopathic female. Because this is the story I know, I associate loons with wonder & fear. The loon makes me think of the destructive power of human passions; frightening but not without beauty.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone here again tomorrow, for the last bird on my mythic bird list.

End of a busy week, but I did it sober!

I didn't have to teach hungover. I didn't have to trim the edges of the day.

And on this Friday night, rather than going to a bar, we are taking the cat to the emergency vet. She has some weird eye infection. We will probably spend less money.

I'm in for another 24 here in the Pacific Northwest.

. Courage interesting read on the loon. I'll look forward to what's coming up next. Busy day of cleaning and baking desserts ( pizza & salad to be delivered). Tomorrow night we're having a birthday party for our son. The band my hubby's in will be playing. Should be a fun time! Checking in for my next 24 hours of recovery....thanks to my HP & AA.
