Hello, nice to be posting here; I'm looking to give up alcohol and had my last drink yesterday.

I'm British but have been working in southern China in an interesting but I think rather stressful job; it's coming to and end in a few weeks however and things are looking a lot smoother, so I'm optimistic about doing without the stuff and its negativity.

I managed 18 weeks or so last year largely also during a break period, and I think I can do this; looking forward to meeting a few folks here.

Best wishes, Sean

Hi SeanMc,
I used to be a backyard astronomer. Got into astrophotography for a while, bought 2 telescopes and many lenses. Managed to get a few good shots of the moon and some planets, then 10 years went by. I might change my avatar to one of my own photos.
Have a great day!

I teach a little American culture including a session on the space programme, and one question to get a response is why the landings stopped in 1972. I ask students to critique the popular cultural ideas that either Apollo was a hoax or alternatively that NASA never stopped going. I rather like the second one but expect that the real reason is just governments' passionlessness and greater stupid interest in the military and power relations.

What do the students think? Most of them are already looking back at their phones... Nihilism isn't the word.

Hey I'm making it towards the end of day one over here!

I have a mundane explanation.
It was a great public relations exercise in the Cold War but I think it was just too expensive in the end Sean.

They moved on to what were seen as more economically viable reusable craft like the space shuttles.

Maybe, sure. The shuttle really was an odd thing however. People walking and driving around on the moon followed by 40 years of low earth orbit with redesigned rocket technology that had always launch satellites, probes and astronauts just fine without this new contraption.

You'll admit that the shuttle always looked like a cover for something. Either it's the best NASA has done and there were no men on the moon, or it's a distraction for an ongoing secret programme...

Hi all, hope you are doing well. I am presently on day 4 and feel pretty restless today. I would love to get drunk now. Sometimes I fear I won't be able to keep this up. It feels horrible at times. Just wanted to get this off my chest. Summer approaches, the worst time to stop drinking imo. The sunshine really kills me. We have had such brutal winters that when the sun really does come out, it is complete bliss when I got to drink on those lovely sunny days down by the water.

Hello all, joining the June class humble and rather scared after failing in April AND May . Trying to be honest with myself and I think I have not been 100% committed. A part of me still hoping I can drink and control it, well yet again I have proved I cannot. I can't carry on like this, big binge and argument with my lovely husband last night. I have to stop drinking its ruining my life in so many ways and has for many many years. I hate it. I want to stop and I really need to stop. Happy to be back with everyone.

I gave my wallet to my mam so even if I want to pull a sly one again and claim to be going for another walk, I can't just nip around to the shop and get loaded. I think it is helping me to get through these negative thoughts and feelings more easily and not just giving in to the compulsion to drink and going to the shop on auto-pilot.
