George Lopez recovering

George Lopez was on Arsenio Hall tonight and shared about how he got arrested for public intoxication in a Canadian casino in late February. He said it was the end of the road for his alcoholism and he got sober.

Evidently he did not get help from AA but from AVRT. He showed a picture of himself as a little boy in a baseball cap and proclaimed, "I stopped drinking because I don't want to hurt this little boy anymore, I don't want to hurt me anymore." He said he will not lie to himself that he can drink in moderation. He has not had a drop of alcohol since he got sober.

AVRT has been helping me tremendously as well. Does anyone here have experiences they can share about using AVRT?

I sure am pleased to hear about George Lopez' decision to get sober, and hearing about AVRT is most welcome and a little unusual. I hope other media pick it up too to let folks know that there are alternatives to 12 step recovery.

SouthernBe11e, this pages here in the Secular Connections forum have many descriptions of AVRT experience (most are good, but not all). That AVRT discussion thread is the obvious one, but look at other threads with Beast or Big Plan or AV in the title. That should keep you going for a while.

I have given that advice, that there is a small scared child inside who needs your care and tender gentle support. I find that image to be very powerful somehow - it's empowering and liberating, and shows the moral aspect of sobriety, a duty of care, a responsibility to self. I have also described AVRT as you have, as breaking up with a cheating romantic partner. I find there to be a lot of useful comparisons in that too.

Glad to hear that you have made the choice to quit drinking too, SB. Goodonya! Onward!

Good for George, and hopefully good for alternative recovery discussions.
