Is a 4th Step supposed to be this exhausting?

Seriously. I do my second column work for six or seven people and feel like I've worked a full workday.
Is this normal/par for the course, or am I especially insane?

It can be. My first was somewhat cathartic and so have been a few others but not nearly as much as the first. In my first case I was still sort of toxic and really still obsessed with drinking, couple that with the metabolic changes going on plus some inner resistance as I progressed.
Yep...........mine was certainly draining on a emotional/mental level.
I became convinced, i needed to be free of all the drama and pain, all that hate and delusion.
I have experience of what happens when i don't do this exercise....and it far out-weighs the uncomfortable stuff of completing it . ..
suggestions ...... don't linger, get it done ASAP.......plan with sponsor to meet for step 5 on completion of 4..ASAP..
Sounds like your getting to the root of the troubles....keep at it and good luck.

Sounds like you are on 'the right track'!
When I finished my 4th step, I felt like a very limp, very small piece of spaghetti noodle. But I also felt relieved, ecstatic, and ready to head to my sponsor's house.
Keep going, you too will feel different and relieved.

Step 4 corollary - The more you put into it, the more you get out of it.
Yep, mine was. There were some things that I would write down, and then have to walk away from for ten or twenty minutes until I calmed down and could write another thing down. A few events took me a couple of weeks, but once I got through the big ones, I finished the rest in a couple of nights. I should note it was my first fourth step, and I have many more ahead of me. I think the next ones will be easier now that I see the rewards of it.
