Hi, I'm new

I am 46 years old and my husband is bipolar, we have been together for 20 years and have two teenage boys. My Therapist suggested Al-anon but I feel funny about that since he gave up drinking and is just suffering from a brain illness. I feel like I don't belong anywhere but maybe here?

Nice to find this place : )

Welcome. When you're sharing you're always in the right place. I suffer from PTSD and am recovering from alcholism. My wife has started alonon over this past year. All the family is affected by mental illness and alcoholism. Each must form their own recovery program. Alanon is for you. You deserve to feel better. Feeling alone is from isolating. Like my wife, along with help you'll meet others. From others you learn how to live. Don W

Welcome to SR.

I can understand why the therapist recommended ALANON. Many times even when an alcoholic quits drinking they still have many of the behaviors that were present when they drank. This can be difficult for their spouse to deal with and maintian boundaries around. You might be surprised at how well you fit in if you went to a meeting. Might be worth going to a couple just to see what they have to offer.

Another place that you might check into is CODA (Co-dependents Anonymous). I only say this because many times people that have lived with a person who has abused drugs or alcohol will wind up developing some co-dependent issues. These groups help those people find solutions to that problem.

Either way please keep posting and once again welcome to SR.

One of my dear friends started going to a meeting that she found through here NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness. This may be in the stickies. Her husband suffers from depression and he has chosen not to get help but she knew she needed help. They deal with mental illness, including addiction.
