Depression and Anxiety- personal hygienge bad

My soon to be 21 yr old suffers from depression and social anxiety. He is seeing a therapist and on anxiety meds. Before starting the meds his personal hygiene was horrible. If he brushes his teeth once a week and bathes once a week he is lucky. I have never smelled me but then again he doesn't allow me to get close. Before he leaves for college (he commutes) he will spray himself with febreeze or a cologne. He wears a hat as well so no one can see his greasy hair.
I am disgusted by him. I had been seeing a therapist because I didn't know how to deal with his drinking and this bad hygiene. He told me that with social anxiety this is normal because those that suffer from it don't want people to talk to them...... SO he started meds then zoloft and another one. I thought for a while he was starting to get better now he is back to not bathing and brushing his teeth. I do not know how his girlfriend can stand him. I really want to call his therapist and tell him that he is back to this again. It is gross. I don't know how he thinks he will be able to function in the real job market once he graduates by acting like this.

I think as a parent I would be more worried about his metal state than his hygiene. The drinking is a whole different issue.

I would recommend checking out ALANON to learn how to effectively deal with an active alcoholic in your life

I agree with Mir as he could be in a deep depression and he's completely given up I'm not sure but I would ring a Dr and before you do just speak to him say about talking to a Dr ?

Hiya turtle

It's quite sad really , I'm sure he senses that you are disgusted by him. He sounds very, very depressed to me.

Most of us that have been in a dark depression have had similar symptoms.

I feel for you too as it must be frustrating , but the more you push sometimes the more depressed he may get.

I agree he needs to see someone. He is keeping people at arms length so he doesn't have to socialise.

He must be feeling like crap.

Good luck , I hope he gets well soon

alcohol makes you sweat out everything pretty bad. i have a friend who is a full blown alcoholic and smoker because of his anxiety and the last time he came over he smelled so bad i couldnt get rid of the smell for 3 days. another one of my friends is a pothead and every single time he comes over his jacket alone smells anything up in the area of it for a day or 2. i did alot of oxycodones and it sometimes made me to sleepy to shower everyday but i always made sure if i was going to be around anyone or leave that i would. you gotta just bluntly bring it up to him because none of his friends or anyone is going to tell him. i told my friends not to come back over until they did lol
