I know that barbiturates (downers) have a high potential for abuse and addiction. I was strung out on them when I was in my early 20's. I wouldn't be willing to be treated for my anxiety knowing what I know about downers.

I have to agree with zencat- I hate to say it but I took benzos (not barbituates) for anxiety and they were wonderful but I did get addicted to them, although not in high doses and I did not abuse them. But, coming off of them was just awful, terrible anxiety for weeks and depersonalization... I wsa afraid it would never end. Now I have found that the very best thing is exercise. Meditation too, but for me exercise helps the best.

benzos and barbit. are both highly addictive and are basically alcohol in pill form...Im my opinion they should be used only for crippling panic attacks that cannot be treated any other way..

I use Respiradone, and it works very well for me and it is non-addictive

Like I mentioned the last time you wrote this thread, acccording to wikipedia.org Quote:
I was on Klonopin in 2007, and I would mix them with alcohol, or take much mroe than the prescribed amount. I basically tricked my doctor into prescribing them to me, my intentions were to get high. I never felt any withdrawal symptoms though once they took me off them (they found out i was abusing them -- I told them). A few months ago, I was on Ativan, same thing, I wanted to get high, I used them as prescribed for about a week, then gave in started taking more than the recommended dose and was mixing it with alcohol. Too many benzos mixed with alcohol put me in a terrible drunken state. I was actually taken to the hospital by a friend. I couldn't walk, and i fell on my head three times. It can be a fatal combo according to some websites. Well the point Im trying to make is that when I stopped the Ativan, I still didn't have withdrawal symptoms. I was a little anxious, but that was from the DXM use and alcohol shakes becasuse i was still using. both alcohol and DXM make me shake coming off them. Now I'm on Valium, been on it for over a month. 5mg twice a day, and have yet to take more than prescribe or drink while on it. In fact, I've been clean 38 days. When I do get off the valium, I don't expect any withdrawal symtpomns because of my history with Benzos. I don't know, im a big fan of Benzos now that I take them properly. They stop my shakes, and I can walk in crowds and get on the trains. But unless you experience panic attacks, maybe it' safer not to get on Benzos. Maybe you just need the proper form of meditation. Excercise for me, lifts my mood, but it doesn't help with aanxiety. but hey, if it worked for someone else, maybe u can try that. | |

I have been struggling with anxiety related to PTSD and bipolar type II for almost 10 years now. For the past 7 years I have had a prescription for klopine which I have taken as prescribed, as needed for attacks. It has worked ok as in it has allowed me to function better than I would have without the medication but still has not addressed the chronic undercurrent of anxiety I have lived with. Recently, a few weeks ago, my psych doc and I discussed other options for therapy. Buspar being added to my current treatment seemed like the most viable option for me. I have been very pleasantly surprised as this medication has significantly reduced my overall anxiety and has reduced my attacks from several a week to so far this week none. If you are looking for options it might be a med you would want to consider speaking to your doctor about. The side effects were rough for the first couple of weeks. Nausea, dry mouth, sleepiness, etc... But they did clear and even if they had not I think I would have continued the medication because for me the benefits outweighed the side effects.

alcohol and benzos = ![]() It's the perfect mix for a total blackout. Once I took 8mg and like 12 beers (the usual). Everybody was telling me I was looking a little drunk but not too much. But I don't remember anything. I woke up in the street, the head knocked out on the sidewalk with blood everywhere (from my head). It was the paramedics who found me. I still have the scar. That can be very dangerous. Not for the overdose but for the things that can happen. If you take benzos, respect the posology :hint: |

Barbs are very dangerous, and as someone else pointed out, are rarely used as a form of medical therapy. Benzos are safer and more commonly used, but you DO NOT want to drink and use either of these drugs at the same time. Black-out, coma, death by vomital asphyxiation, etc... RIP Hendrix.
