overwhelming anxiety
Hi,
Have you ever had your blood sugars tested? I like you, was addicted to alcohol for anxiety for 10 years, realizing it just made me feel worse. Google low blood sugar symptoms. they are the same as anxiety, also hypoglycemia. How is your diet. You need to eat every 3 hours when ou quit drinking my doctor told me. Healthy low carb. I fought for my health for years, I was sick of doctors blowing me off and always saying it was anxiety. I quit drinking and took klonopin everday for anxiety and still wanted to drink.

I agree there is a connection between blood sugar and anxiety. I tend to get most anxious in between meals and when I'm hungry. Once I eat something (preferably which has no sugar), I feel better and less anxious. Holly, what blood sugar medication do you take? I want to talk to my new doctor about it.

Metformin. I take klonopin and my psychiatrist and addiction specialist both told me it does not make you crave alcohol if anything it should help. It is not what some people like to call booze in a pill. Addiction specialist swears by it and so does psych doc.
These doctors are excellent Clev Clinic doctors. My psych even acknowledges the link between low blood sugar and binge drinking. All alcohol is sugar.

My symptoms happen after eating. Within 2 hours I feel nervous again. I knew something was off because the klonopin works and I was still having attacks of shaking, nervous, short of breath, upset stomach. It is called reactive hypoglycemia. It happens every 2 hours if you don't eat. Blood sugar goes high then drops really low which causes all symptoms. You will not just be prescribed
Meds you have to do a 7 hour glucose test

I've had low blood sugar for a long time. I eat smaller meals and more often. My anxiety is sometimes like alcohol withdrawal: shaking/trembling and bad anxiety and can't 'sit still' or focus/concentrate. I try to eat protein as it's a slow burning food that doesn't shoot up the bg and then crash back down again. It's 'burned' slowly by the body.
I'd say most of my anxiety is situational, at least right now, as I've got my 19 yr old (an immature demanding brat) living with me at the moment and it's driving me nuts. I also care for my mom who has alzheimers which really wears me out, mentally and physically.
A lot of my anxiety will go away when youngest kid finally gets her own place and I have my 'empty nest' back again.

SSRI's can help without the feeling of being high and don't have the downside of benzo's.
I'd certainly ask your physician.
I started drinking because of anxiety issues and was prescribed Lexapro for about a year after getting sober. For me it was a wonder drug. One day I decided to see what life was like without it. Didn't notice any change and have been off it for over three years. I think sobriety changed my outlook and over time this affected my anxiety.
Anyway, worth a look.
Best, Bill

A lot of people start drinking because of underlying and usually undiagnosed anxiety issues. So once they become sober they are often ill equipped to deal with the anxiety that inevitably follows sobriety. That was certainly the case for me.
I have also heard but do not have firsthand knowledge that the same problem exists in people who quit smoking.
