Dangers of Librium/ Xanax treatment

I have been prescribed Librium and Xanax to help deal with the anxiety/ sleeplessness of alcohol withdrawal. So far it has worked very well, I haven't had a drink for 7 days. Does anyone have experience with this type of treatment, and what should I expect when I stop taking the meds?

Welcome sharkey.

From what I understand xanax can be very addictive.Of course your doctor knows best but would you not consider a more natural way of getting to sleep? Therapeutic massage or herbal teas for example ?

I took 3 or 4 xanax to get me through the shaking parts of the withdrawal but then the oldtimers in AA told me that I needed to stop or risk becoming addicted to them. So I did. I didn't want to go through the hell of withdrawing from one substance only to get hooked on another. But I was shaking so bad and had to work so the Xanax did serve its purpose for me.

I don't know anything about Librium. Just be very cautious and congrats on the 7 days!

Alcohol is a liquid drug.

Xanax IS a solid addictive drug.

A drug is a drug.

Does anyone have experience using the benzodiazapenes for therapy? They seem to work very well for sleeplessness, relief of anxiety, and significantly curbs my desire for alcohol. What do I have to look forward to when the doctor stops this treatment?

I think you'll be okay if you're only using it short term and you follow the docs instructions. They do have a high addiction potential though.

I was prescribed a small daily dose of Klonopin (another benzo) for OCD related anxiety, but I couldn't follow the docs instructions. I'd take more then was indicated for me because I wanted a high too.

I wanted to add that when I detoxed with librium, it was prescribed for a set period (2 weeks) on a reducing dosage so that I started on (I can't remember the doses) 2 tablets 4 x day then slowly down thru' 1 tablet 4 x day then skipping doses until I weaned off it over the 2 weeks. Obviously my doctor had to trust me to take it properly but I was desperate for the help.

As for xanax, I can't advise there - I'm already on prozac for another condition.
