The best part of waking up

Remember the old commercial "The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup".? On day 35, after 1/2 fifth a day for two years, each and every morning my first thought upon awakening is that I didn't drink the night before. So, I automatically feel good for the day!

I still feel grateful every morning to wake up without a hangover.

Even after over a year and half I still wake up in the morning and before I even open my eyes I think "thank God I am sober and not waking up sick".

I quit alcohol 112 days ago - speaking of coffee I also managed to quit that too.

Waking up is still tough for me most morning because of my depression. But things are improving.

I don't have those gloom and doom feelings of dread as bad as I used to.

Lots of good thoughts here, great reminder too Northeast. I am also grateful for each day that I can wake up without the shackles of a hangover or withdrawal following me around.

That could have been me writing that. For me the best part of waking up sober is not wishing I were dead. I still get depressed, but I can manage it -- I couldn't manage my alcoholism except by quitting.

Let us know on the boards how you're going, ok Doug? Congratulations on 112 days!

The best part? Not sweating, mind racing, dry heaving and in full blown withdrawal wanting to die.

LOL , me two, just as I clicked. made myself laugh.

Morning time is my favorite time of the day. In fact, I started setting my alarm a little earlier recently just so I can have more of it.

For me it's knowing that I plan to have another sober day of living life as an active participant in it.

I second that! My family has had the stomach bug and I managed to avoid it for a bit but it eventually got to me too. I woke up feeling nauseous and was actually excited because I knew it wasn't from drinking lol. It was such a relief.

I'm not giving up coffee any time soon! When I was deep into my alcoholism, I hade given it up as it made me feel sick. I could hardly keep water down. So it's a big reward to me to drink the coffee just like in the old days.

Anyways, I wake up in a great mood most mornings. I used to dread them. When I was drinking, I always stayed up very late into the mornings and woke up still half drunk. Now I'm asleep by 10:30 and wake up refreshed and sober. Good times. Oh, and happy Valentines Day to everyone in this thread too!

Even though it's all been said above, it feels good to type out some of the reasons I'm doing this.

-Not having a hangover or otherwise feeling off in the AM has been great.
-Not wondering if I said/did something stupid the night before that I'll eventually have to apologize for.
-Not having the dread of checking our bank account to see how much money I spent after telling the wife that I'm only going out for a beer or two with the guys.
-Not having the general guilt that I know I need to change at some point but am too selfish to make such a change.
