Thankful
Last year at this time, I had my children with me. I prepared a nice Thanksgiving meal and watched a movie with them that night.
However, I was drunk. I was drinking vodka and chasing it with beer. All day. For most of the day, my kids watched TV in the living room while I watched mine in the bedroom, and passed out.
I am not thankful I don't have my kids this year, but I am thankful neither of them lost their lives because I regularly drank and drove with them. I am thankful I lived through a crash that could have maimed, or killed, me. I'm thankful no one else was involved. Above all, I'm thankful to not only be sober, but to be on a spiritual journey to address all the reasons I kept trying to find solutions at the bottom of a bottle.
I'm also thankful to have a full-time job, a car, and to still be living in my own house. I don't know what tomorrow holds, but I'm grateful for what I have today.
