Naltrexone

Hello everyone,
I suffer from weed and alcohol and I was wondering if anyone has tried Naltrexone and if you could share your experience?I know it's not a silver bullet but maybe it can help me get started..thanks in advance.

You'd want to check with your doc on that. Results are varied...it works for some and not for others. There are also potential side effects including dependence on and withdrawal from the naltrexone itself.

What is pretty much agreed on though is that it's not a substitute for a solid sobriety plan...it is to be used in conjunction with one.

When visiting your physician for help, in
which they are there for us to use for
medical advice and health issues, along
with applying a program of recovery
to our life, I make sure they are aware
of my addiction to alcohol or drugs and
if meds are to be prescribed, that it not
be narcotic or habit forming.

I make sure that my doctor knows that my
recovery is top priority and that I definitely
do not want anything to interfere with
my progress.

I will protect my sobriety by all cost.

Its never too late to learn all we can
about addiction and to be taught
healthy ways to live life without drugs
or alcohol or poisonous substance.

I use Naltrexone but I agree, I would ask your doctor about it. At the beginning it seemed to help a lot with cravings and I don't know if my body is adjusting to it or what but it seems to be losing it's effectiveness. I think it is helping some but it doesn't seem to be helping as much. I have been on the oral version for 4 months (I am on my 4th month now). Good luck with whatever you decide

Hi Stubbs,
I've been on Naltrexone for about 5 months and it has helped out immensely with cravings. I also read it will help shorten the length of an unfortunate relapse. You will need to take the pill at the same time each day. I take mine with food because it can cause an upset stomach early on. I have had no side effects and life is good. There is Vivatrol , which is a injection of Naltrexone ...it is good for 1 month..so you don't have to remember to take the pill each day. Best Wishes

Hey, Stubbs! I've been taking naltrexone for nearly 5 months and it's helped me a lot but it has to be used with a treatment plan. You can gets drunk on it (I did) but it is a drug that does exactly what is says it will do. It did give a feeling like a low-grade hangover for about a week but not intolerable. Good luck!

Well I got my Naltrexone,
It is a mail order drug due to my insurance.I talked with my doc for awhile and this isn't the first time I've seen him about my drinking. He is 100% positive the only way out is AA.He agreed to give me the meds but he preached AA to me for most our visit.I have to say,of what I know about alcoholism I think I can be about 95% sure what he says is true.We will see how this works out for me.

You have been doing this on your own, stubbs, and not to much success before. What's going to be difference this time? Just the Naltrexone?

I recall back in Aug. 1990 when I enter
a rehab facility/hospital, I was evaluated
by the doctors first and was diagnosed
with just a drinking problem and addiction.

Each morning each patient was to
go to the main desk for meds if they
were on them or given to them to
take and was all handled from nurses
to the patient.

For me, I went up to have my vital
signs taken, temperature, blood pressure
and off I went and was so happy and proud
of myself that I didn't take pills or need
them.

For 28 days I followed the days routine
of exercise, learning the teachings of
addiction and program of recovery for
those 28 days till I was set free to go
home.

While there I recall walking the track
outside sweating out all those toxins
in my body from alcohol. Each day I worked
towards arming myself with better tools
of a recovery program to use in my everyday
life instead of killing myself with poison.

I was never given pills to take to remain
sober before, during or after I got sober.
A program of recovery, AA was all I needed
and still use today to live a healthy, happy,
honest life each day I am sober.

For that I am truly grateful.

However, I am aware that everyones
situation is different, and each person
is responsible for their own recovery
to do whatever it takes to achieve a
healthy life in sobriety using their
physicians accordingly.

So are you going along to AA as the Doctor suggested?

Like your signature says: 'Recovery is not about quitting alcohol and drugs. It is about learning to live a life that does not require mood-altering chemicals to be worth living.' That's pretty much what AA has done for me. A whole lot of learning how to live sober. When you look at the 12-steps, only the first even mentions alcohol. All the others are about that learning to live sober.

Wishing you luck and serenity on your sober journey to recovery Stubbs.

This is a good site for speakers as well... 5500+ AA Speaker Tapes - Organized & Mobile-Friendly!

It could be worth phoning the AA helpline and leaving your details. They'd get another AA member local to you (same sex) to contact. It might seem less daunting after chatting to someone who can maybe meet you before the meeting so you don't have to walk in alone.

Just thoughts stubbs......I commend you for
reading helpful suggestions past on to you
in regards to guiding you along in your own
recovery journey.

I, like many who have found the AA program
to work in our lives in helping us remain sober
a many one day at a time, continuously, is due
to many members passing on their own ESH-
experiences, strengths and hopes of what their
lives were and are like before, during and after
drinking or drugs to us.

In listening to them use this AA recovery program
and has been successful giving me hope that if
they could and would remain sober, then so could
I.

There is soooo much information and help
available to those willing to do whatever
they need to do to live life sober or clean.

Keeping an open mind, willingness and
honesty to what is available to you and
what will work best for your own sobriety
will insure you long term recovery for many
one days sober or clean down the road.

Like a round peg trying to fit in a square
hole, if it doesn't fit, don't force it but rather
find a round hole to fit the round peg. It will
work if you work to finding the right fit. If
that analogy makes sense.

Keep It Simple, don't stress, relax, stay
on track and keep researching, keep
learning, absorbing, listening and applying
a recovery program to achieve health,
happiness and many more awesome rewards
in recovery many of us are enjoying in life today.

I am just one of many who continue to
pave the way for you and others wanting
to live a sober or clean life.

I use Naltrexone , and it helps me with the shakes and it stops the high from alcohol and it can make a person vomit, but not like Antabuse. I't also make the alcohol not taste so good. It has helped me.
