Matt -

I would pray for the willingness to work the steps and participate in the program.

No one (well, almost no one) really wants to work the steps.

I didn't want to go to AA either.

There are more than a few things in life I don't want to do but that I must do.

For me, working the steps with a sponsor fit into that category.

Please keep us posted, amigo.

I can only give you my experience. I first walked into an AA meeting in April of 1990. I have been in and out of AA several times since then, relapsed twice after several years of sobriety -- and I never worked the steps. I came back to AA in April of 2013 after an 8 year bender and near death.

I figured that this time I would be willing to try doing the steps even though opening up to someone was the primary reason I hadn't been willing to do them in the past. I had the gift of desperation this time that I guess I was lacking in prior attempts at sobriety. I found a sponsor I was comfortable with who had successfully taken hundreds of people through the steps and took the leap of faith that he could do the same for me. It turns out that taking the steps and experiencing a spiritual awakening was the missing link to contented long-term sobriety.

For me it took reaching a level of desperation I had never experienced before in order to become willing to try the steps. I wish it wouldn't have taken that yet reaching that state saved my life in the end. I would say that my years of sobriety without working the steps were conditional on a strict adherence to attending a lot of meetings and occasionally battling through strong desires to drink. Now my sobriety is conditional on keeping in fit spiritual condition. I do this by living by the principals of the 12 steps, or more simply by trusting my HP, regularly cleaning house and helping others whenever possible. The steps have been the easier, softer way for me.
