I think my animals rescued me.

They definitely keep me grounded and give me a sense of connection.

You're right Cow, dogs require time spent with them. I always had dogs and love them. When I moved into a third floor condo I didn't have a dog. One day a cat came to visit me late at night and she spent the night on my bed with me. Soon after I went and got a rescue cat. Never thought I'd have a cat. He doesn't require much and is fine if I leave him for twelve hour or even overnight.

Cats can be left alone for days. Used to leave a pair at home for two nights, three days regularly. All they need is a pile of food, a big bowl of water and a clean litterbox.

I think they were a little resentful when we reappeared. Maybe not the best thing for sense of importance.

Best of both worlds.

Oh !!! Please consider getting a kitten ! They are little balls of love who will total give Cow false sense of importance. I seriously LOVE my cat and would total have 200 and be crazy cat lady if I wasn't so GD allergic.

I keep hoping sensitivity will go away because I love love love LOVE kittens.

I love my dog too, but now HE is one high maintenance dude. A, high strung , anxious hot mess, who is a bird dog but is afraid of flies.

What ? Yep.

Kittens will capitulate to "angry" hugs because just out of blue, they attack you for no good reason. That angry hug to me.

Besides, you too would have something in common...

I want kittens for my friend...

Wow, any time pet is brought up is total clear that human like animal much more than other human. Like I always say, human is worst mistake evolution ever make.

Not getting cat, AO. I been around cat before, it just always become competition to see who most bitchy.

Bitchy cat is cat being true to own nature.

I used to love dogs because they are so dependably love-struck. Then as I got older, I no longer wanted love-struck. I wanted space.

Cat gives space.

But cat likes to sleep on the bed and will allow a small amount of cuddling a couple times a day.

Bitchy is not a bad thing. Bitchy means confident in cat-talk.

no joke phone. husband's phone. my phone is about 1 year newer, no smarter -- but I'm stupider, because i was the one who literally flushed old trusted-and-true Samsumg red flip down a toilet.

Cow, i so appreciate you not getting a dog til you're more stable. a dog is owed some basic stability and reliability.

you'll likely know when and if the time is right.

my opinion. which no-one asked for.

I think a mature dog, from the shelter, that is calm, could be a very good addition to any household. I vote against a puppy or kitten. They are high maintenance.

I have four dogs so I'm biased. One acts very much like a cat, which is a good combination! I also like cats very much although I don't have one right now. Can't imagine life with no dog or cat.

It seems unnecessarily cruel to deny one's self of a companion like that. If you get it from the shelter, worst case scenario, you give it back. You did not bring it into the world and abandon it. You can even tell them you are new to this and are taking it on a trial basis.

No puppy dogs for Cow right now. I far too feeble, unreliable, lazy, selfish, and plus also is small matter that I not yet sufficiently demonstrate that I will stay sober. Smart puppy dog would hide in corner of kennel and/or try to appear undesirable should I walk through shelter.

I does have many pet rock and plant, Brain, and also is my belove hummingbirds, for which I expend exhaustive energies making the sugar water.

Ok Cow. A very good friend of mine once said, "Some of my longest and best relationships have been with house plants." I could only say, amen to that!

Yes, I find plants is very easy to get along with. You not have to sleep with them, and they never asks you to help them move.
