Approval from boss
Approval from boss
Hey everyone. My name is Brian and I'm a real alcoholic. After having my name printed in the newspaper for an OWI, I revealed to my boss of about 3 months that I was an alcoholic. She was very supportive when I told her how long I had been sober and what I was doing for my recovery. Recently I approached her to ask her for some time off for a court date, mental health evaluation and memorial AA meeting for my late step uncle. She not only granted the time but proceeded to tell me how much she admired what I was doing, how much she supported and respected me and basically offered to give me a written character testimony if it would help my case. That was really touching. By the way this woman has cancer and is under going radiation treatment right now. Don't know what her prognosis is, I haven't felt it my business to ask. But words can't explain how proud I felt in that moment. People really see a difference. It wasn't always like that. See when I was drinking I was the type of employee that would smile and shake the bosses hand only so I could wait for him to turn his back so I could kick him in the balls and reach in his wallet. See because everyone owed me. My dealings with employers were like most everything that used to be in my life. Controlled by fear, resentment, dishonesty and selfishness. I didn't give a damn about employers and I didn't mind blowing off work (and not always calling) so I could day drink or be hungover or both. I just wanted to share this to let people know that change is possible. We can change the way we live and it starts with changing the way we think.
Thanks for a wonderfully positive share Brian. It still amazes me how the world is full of wonderful people only to happy to encourage someone who is doing his honest best to change for the better.
Obviously you are regarded as a very good employee too, practicing these principles in all your affairs perhaps? In so doing you will be helping many others through your demonstration of what AA recovery is all about.

Awesome post. This part hit home:

That was me in a nutshell as an employee and person to some extent, while drinking.

Thanks Brian, I enjoyed reading your thread.
My boss was also supportive when I admitted to her I am Alcoholic.
She almost could not believe me, she said if you managed to do such a great job on a hangover I can't wait to see your performance sober.
I have been rocking my work ever since and not letting her down.

Love the Ali quote patman. Reminds me of:
When I was 20, I couldn't believe how stupid my old man was.
When I was 30, I couldn't believe how much he had learned in the last 10 years.

Thanks everyone, yeah my sponsor tells me I will be able to help a lot of people some day and I will give a great lead. I plan on telling my whole story here and other places eventually. It's been a long road for me, but being able to be honest and not always operating with some alterior motive has been huge for me.
