what is a NOVALCO ?
Hi all,
Have not been here a while, still sober and doing great.....
I found some "old" AA books on recovery ( non AA approved literature ) on the 12 steps.
One of the books, in the "instructions" mentions " the NOVALCO METHOD..."
when I break up the word, it surely does expose "NO V ALCO"...
May someone shed a bit of light on what the "NOVALCO METHOD" of recovery actually means from your own experience if you have done the NOVALCO METHOD, please.

I have no clue....guess I'll stay an AA recovered alcoholic anyway.
The reason it's not AA approved is simple...the book copyright
is owned by Hazleton Publishing.
Same with others....the 24 hours and the Green book.
Welcome back Pete... thanks for checking in

Thanks and thanks Carol...
Well, this is how it went...
I friend in AA showed me a old green book, 1st edition "Stools and Bottle"s which was passed on by that member's sponsor who has to this day 40+ years sobriety.
The title of the green book made sense, the 1st 3 steps is like the 3 legs on a stool, if one leg is missing, the stool falls over.
So basically in plain English, "get" the 1st 3 steps before ya go on to the 4th.
The "bottles" within the book's chapters are 9 titles for defects of character, ( Bottle 1 represents Self Pity, Bottle 2 is Resentments, and so on )
Therefore, "Stools and Bottles" ( The green book )
Within reading the Green Book, they make reference to a "Little Red Book".
So I asked at a AA meeting if they have heard of it and said ,"sure, we have it here for loan"....,
So I borrowed it.
Read parts of it and thought, "must have both, the red and the green!"
Ordered 2 red books online because the red book can come with a large Red study book for the Little Red Book along with the green book.
It is in the large red study book, in the Preface where it mentions the words, "NOVALCO Method".
Conclusion,
At this point I have not done the NOVACLO method as instructed in the Little Red Book's large study red book.
It does seem at a glance one can "take the steps" on their own, except for step 5.
Both Green and Red Books endorses AA's BB and make many references to the BB of AA and no other.
The green book recommends certain chapters and paragraphs in the BB to read more of the topic in question.
It does not seem to change anything, except in the order
of things relating to, "Spiritual-Mental and Physical"
Some have it in reverse, "Physical-Mental and Spiritual"
How can one become physically and mentally fit if they are not spiritually fit first ?
It ( The large-Little Red Book-study book) does seem to indicate it's for most other types of addictions to, not just alcohol..... which is a good thing..
BB Quoted...First Edition

Resentment is the "number one" offender. It destroys more alcoholics than anything else. From it stem all forms of spiritual disease, for we have been not only mentally and physically ill, we have been spiritually sick. When the spiritual malady is overcome, we straighten out mentally and physically. page 64 of BB

Novalco
Hi Pete:
NOVALCO is a book written by Elmer Hicks of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
It is a method of doing the 12 Steps of AA in sequence.
The word NOVALCO means "new alcoholic" as stated on page 55 of the book.
This book was used in the penitentiary (Penal) systems in Saskatchewan for many years and may still be in use there.
Permission was granted by AA World Services Inc. to use the 12 Steps of AA for the adaption of the book.
The edition given to me is from 1968.
I hope this explains a little for you.

I heard the term back in 1982
I attended a structured step study workshop that had a lot of printed material for each step that supposedly came from NOVALCO. Some of the workshops are still going on here in Southern California. QUOTE=Bradf;4392721]Hi Pete:

Okay, so this is the alcoholism forum, not the twelve step one, so some of my above statement doesn't apply as we can pretty much discuss any method here, but for the sake of newcomers to aa, we probably shouldn't call this aa. Because it's not.
