Back in the wrecked boat, trying not to use or drink

So a week ago I got into a car accident, another car crossed the center line on a curve on the highway and smacked into mine (I've been on the other side of a drunk driving accident now). I got in a nasty wreck a few years back that left me with no spleen, one less kidney, and hardware in my leg, arm and back. Driving drunk, way too fast and without a seatbelt, and hit a telephone pole. But anyway, here I am all wrecked up again, a rod in my thigh, a cracked rib, torn muscles in my back and plenty of nice cuts and bruises. Needless to say I feel pretty fantastic right now

Anyway, the doctor prescribed me Lortabs for pain. I haven't touched them yet, just taken Advil and tried not to pull my hair. Alcohol has always been my 'problem drug', but before I got sober I did use opiates, so I'm scared to use them now. And I think the worst of the pain has passed now, so I think I can stay away from them. It's just very frustrating. Being out of work and very bored doesn't help either, boredom and cabin fever both tend to kick my temptation to drink into overdrive (and since my roommate keeps alcohol in the house now I wouldn't even have to drag my ass out of the house to get it).

This is mostly just me venting. Sorry guys, had to do it

Ouch, sounds rough. I'm glad you're still among the living. I'm just going to put this out there... and I don't really know if it's appropriate to you or if other people are going to agree... but man, you were just hit by a car. I think that taking the meds your Dr. prescribed as prescribed is okay. I mean, I don't know your personal situation - only you know if it's going to be a problem for you or not, but geez it seems a bit extreme. You just got hit by a car! If there's a time to take a damn pain pill, it's now, lol.

Disclaimer: I never drank the cooking wine or the vanilla extract. I got sick last week and took nyquil for several days without issue. I sometimes eat food that has been cooked with alcohol. So do what's best for you obviously but don't suffer unnecessarily!

Leek that sounds like a tough deal. Not drinking is one thing, but drawing the line about when you are overdoing it on meds is a hard call. It sounds like you are making good decisions. I guess we all know when we are buzz seeking.

I hope the angels watch over you

Re:Back in the wrecked boat.

Hey...put that car in reverse for a second and reread your thread. A drug is a drug however you define it, whether it's opiates or alcohol. If you feel yourself itching for a drink, than find an online recovery forum instead, like this one. The waters are safe to drink there. And it won't cost you anything. I hope you heal soon.

My body does not know the difference between a street drug or legal drug. All my body knows is it wants more. Why open Pandora's box if you don't have to. Sorry to here about all of your medical problems. I hope things get better for you. Love and Respect. logo

People with a lot of time who relapse seem to do it with prescribed painkillers that are addictive. I suggest asking the pharmacist what he/she recommends in over the counter meds. This would be a very tough thing for me to deal with......... Can you talk directly with another alcoholic? It will probably help.

Thanks for the replies guys

I got some advice from someone that Aleve may work better, tried it today and didn't really notice much of a difference. And the only contact I have with other recovering alcoholics is on this site, but it helps a lot so as I long as I hang around here I usually manage to get things straightened out.
