got a question for you all....
got a question for you all....
i have a gnarly cold...it might even be the flu.
headache, body aches, upper respiratory infection horrible cough blah blah blah
it's the first time i've been sick in 14 months. i've taken vitamin C, lots of clear liquid, using cough drops.
still, i have a tickle in my throat that dosen't allow me to lay down and rest.
i know what has worked for me in the past to supress the coughing, and it's always been Robitussin.
the problem is 99% of the effective couch supressants use alcohol as a non-active ingredient.
should i take some?

That's a personal choice, in my opinion. I've never had any problem taking Robitussin or Nyquil or any other medication like that. Some people can do it but it might be problematic for others. Yeah, I know that didn't exactly answer your question, but...

I take Musinex DM to break up chest congestion...and Dlysum (sp). is what the pharmacist recommended...The local pharmacist might be the best OTC consult about ingredients.
Musinex does make me sleepy so i only take it at night.

i called my doctor and asked him what i should do. he knows my history and said there would be no issue with the robitussin even if the inactive was alcohol. i asked him if it could trigger a physical craving...he said no way. in the doses used for treating a cough, it's perfectly safe even for a recovering alcoholic.
so i took some and had no physical cravings at all. i even feel a little better.

Sounds as though you were lucky.
I have had a similar experience. Of course, my way of thinking was, "I'm not *that* bad", such a small amount isn't a concern, etc. etc.
I even did this while taking antabuse. I guess that, to me, it is sort of like drinking "non-alcoholic" beer.....I may get away with it, probably will. The problem is that it is kind of pushing the envelope. My tendency is to push that envelope for all it's worth. I can always find some "authority" to validate those beliefs. So what tends to happen is that, the next time, I push a bit more.

I wasn't trying to "get away" with anything or push any envelope.
I know how close to death i was. i never need to visit that place again.
Nor do i need any authority to validate anything except it's that in his most concerning thought prcoess that it would not be dangerous for me if my motives were pure. they were. completely. I can say that without ANY reservation.
now then...after a long nap and some OJ, i'm starting to feel human again.

There really are tons of alternatives that contain the same active ingredient without alcohol. Best person to ask is pharmacist. Make sure you get the right one, that's the biggest decision (cough suppresant, expectorant, etc).,.
I wouldn't worry about the alcohol. Nothing OTC works IME but I think you had a pain med addiction too right? So that precludes the stuff that really works for me anyway. Unless maybe you could manage it, IDK. Anyway I hope you feel better soon!
after a good nap i do feel better. my wife also made me some chicken soup and that's helping alot too.
i took my temp and i had a pretty good fever but after taking some tylenol, it seems like it's starting to break. i think this was more than just a cold. i'm wondering if i had the flu.
